Admittedly, I’m a bit of a germ-phobe. My 7-year old son, on the other hand, seems to need to touch everything in his surroundings to get to know a place. Is it possible to assess a new room without rubbing the walls and floor? Without climbing on the raised surfaces? He and I disagree. Perhaps I don’t have the appropriate respect for his spidey-sense that tunes him in to the vibe of a new environment (babies put everything in their mouths for similar reasons, right?).

Thus begins my story.

Amusement parks are full of furbuls — those permanent and movable posts and railings that tell us where to queue — and his logic dictates that they all must be tested. Each one must be climbed, pulled, sat upon, or swung under; all four if possible.

Holden discovered that the barricade cordoning off our parade viewing area was temporary by resting on it and knocking over the ropes and two heavy posts into the street barely missing five sitting children. Universal Studios theme park is a mighty big place so my spider-son had to keep investigating, leaning, twirling, and pushing.

Unfortunately, later that same day, he encountered yet another set of temporary posts holding up a rope. He learned that these posts weren’t secure by attempting to swing under the rope. This time, his head paid the price with scrapes and bumps. And blood. This is the son that taught me that heads bleed a lot. He keeps reteaching me this lesson. The park health services were summoned and came very quickly to patch him up. They sent us on our way with some antibiotic goo, mild pain reliever, and instructions for concussion watch (No worries. This time).

I wrapped his head in gauze to protect the pillow and he showed me his ninja moves.

Luckily, there was no significant physical damage to report. And the very next day, he was scaling walls again.

Because we happened to be in Spiderman’s neighborhood, he also got a chance to meet some real superheroes. They probably talked about how parents just don’t understand.

Please tell me your kid does this too.

This adventure happened at Universal Orlando Resort, which I promise to tell you more about at a later date. Flight, accommodations, meals, park tickets, and souvenirs provided. No compensation was received. The honest opinions are my own and those of my family.
