When your toddler won’t poop — or when it is a hurty poop!

If feeding your child stewed prunes and other high-fiber foods isn’t enough, it might be time to get serious with toddler constipation. One of my sons was consistently constipated after he began eating solids. He wasn’t stopped up for days on end — though that happens, ouch! — but he had many instances of Hurty Poop where constant straining caused little tears and blood in his stool.

I’m sharing this in case our experience can help you.

What to do when it hurts to poop

What to do when it is scary to poo

After a lot of worried calls to our pediatrician, she recommended we start supplementing with a small spoonful of Miralax daily (ask your doctor about dosages!) to keep thing moving along. She gave us a helpful analogy of the “poop train” where even regular poopers might be discharging only some of the cars and never get to the caboose.

Miralax to help toddler constipation and hurty poops!

Our doctor told us that Miralax is not harmful or addictive and much better than teaching a small person to fear going poop. We have him a very small quantity twice daily. It is a soluble powder that can be added to milk (shake well) or warm liquids (like a weak herbal tea).

For little people the dosage is rather small already, so a big jug like we had lasts a long time. Over the year of treatment, we probably only went through 2 or 3 containers this pictured right. As the poop became softer and pooping less scary, we phased it out by using smaller and smaller doses of Miralax.

I wouldn’t hesitate to use it again whenever constipation rears its ugly head.

Let me know if you ever want to hear more of my hurty poop stories; I’d love to hear yours!
