How we geeked out on watching our baby sleep

Thanks to VTech and the new Safe & Sound® Pan & Tilt Full-Color Video & Audio Monitor for sponsoring this post and offering one up for you (see below).

One of the earliest taglines of this website was “the geeky girls guide to the first year of motherhood” because of our dedication to counting, measuring, and generally nerding out over our babies.

While I’ve already confessed to being a control freak, step counter, meal planner, and baby tracker in the extreme, I don’t think I’ve ever shared this here story:

A long time ago, in a land called Berkeley, baby Holden started waking up from naps on the opposite side of the crib from where he started. As new parents we were befuddled. The kid didn’t know how to crawl yet; what was going on?

To solve this mystery, we borrowed a large video camera and tripod from a friend and set it up to create a time lapse movie during naptime. We set it to capture one second of video per minute of his day. For real. Then we totally geeked out watching it and trying to show our friends how utterly amazing it was that Holden learned to scoot and wiggle when we weren’t even in the room.

If facebook had existed, I’m sure we would have bored our extended circle with this milestone. If I knew how to get it off the tape, I would play it here for you.

But that was the olden days. Now you can watch sleepytime TV on a pimped out monitor that lets you change the camera angle — pan, tilt, or zoom — when baby scoots out of frame without entering the room. No tripod required.

This particular model from VTech lets you add up to four cameras to monitor different rooms with the same parent unit. And you can sing or shush from your handset as needed. Available on amazon and many retail outlets.

What do you wish you could see your baby doing when you’re not in the room?
