Activity #402: Send your used stuffed animals to Iraq

by RookieMom Heather on October 21, 2009

in Green, Toddler

Iraqi child with new toyIf you want to clear out some old toys to make room for new ones, I’d like to remind you about this worthy cause.

** Updated *** As of October 2009, this mailing address is current:
Edmay Mayers
USACE-GRD (District)-KRO
FOB Warrior-Kirkuk
APO, AE 09359

It is free to order a mailer kit from USPS and it will be delivered to your house. After you pack it up, the postal rates are similar/same as sending a care package anywhere in the continental US.

We packed ours full of some of my husband’s old stuffed toys (his family had a “tradition” of giving him stuffed toys every year that he never even touched!) and some of Holden’s gently-used little stuffed animals and doodads. I’m also opened it up to my mama-friends and sent some of their goodies too.

Asha from Parent Hacks asked us to spread the word about sending our used stuffed animals and toys to children in Iraq. She was recently contacted by a member of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers stationed in Iraq who offered to distribute any and all toys she receives. She has been pleased at the outpouring of toys and gifts so far, but I know we all have more to send.

Read more about Edmay Mayers’ passion for the Iraqi children and also about Asha’s toy drive.

If you don’t have any toys on-hand to send right now, consider buying up a few little ones from Oriental Trading Company and sending them directly.

Thanks so much for this, Heather. I was just going to post a little reminder about this on Parent Hacks. (Still will — Edmay sent me the most amazing letter I’d like to share with readers.)

Janet Hawkins December 27, 2006 at 1:58 pm

Are you still collecting stuffed animals? Please let me know ASAP. Thanks.

Heather December 28, 2006 at 9:52 pm

Yep, as far as I know, you can keep on sending those stuffed animals and toys: parenthacks.com/2006/12/toys_to_iraq_lo.html
And you can get free shipping via USPS.

Edmay January 6, 2007 at 12:20 am

Yes, we are still accepting anything you wish to send. Thanks so much to all/Edmay

Just stumbled on your bog and started reading. What a wonderful idea this is. I’m a mom of six and I am inundated with stuffed animals throughout the year. Thank you so much for getting the word out. I will post this on my site soon too. Got to get the word out!!! Good luck on your Mommy Adventures!

Someone had said that you can get free shipping from USPS. Is there a similar service provided for those of us shipping from Cananda?

Heather March 6, 2007 at 3:39 pm

I was wrong… you can get free shipping SUPPLIES from USPS, but the postage was about $10. Check with the Canadian Post and let us know.

Thanks for publishing this information. A friend of mine had a couple large bags of small stuffed animals, and I told her about this program. I will be boxing these stuffies up and sending them out this week. Anything to help support our troops and make their jobs easier.

Gail R September 25, 2007 at 7:18 pm

What is the current mailing address to send stuffed animals? I have lots to send.

Gail R September 27, 2007 at 7:47 pm

This is a great idea and a wonderful thing you are doing; HOWEVER,
WHERE DO WE SEND THE STUFFED ANIMALS???? There is nothing on this page that jumps out with an address! You could get more things donated if you would put an address front and center! I can’t find it! Thank you.

Andrea Antunez December 31, 2007 at 9:04 pm

Hi Andrea, the address is in bold. You want to send the care package to either Michael or Natalie care of the military address and they will see to the distribution.

LOUISE SHAFFER January 7, 2008 at 8:19 pm

I do volunteer work at a non-profit thrift store and we get tons (almost!!) of really nice stuffed toys that I would be glad to send to Iraq but I do not have the money for postage. Can anyone help in this area? I will gladly do the work of getting them sorted and send only really nice ones. Thanks Louise

Salvation Army no longer accepts stuffed animals or toys for donation. My daughter helped to pack up things to “send to the poor kids” and I want to fulfill her wish. Are you still taking donations?

Kristina B. February 27, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Is the above address still good? I’m moving out of my parents’ house and am THRILLED to find good homes for my stuffed animals!!! Thank you so much for doing this!!!

Kathy Roberson March 12, 2008 at 6:04 am

Is the address posted in bold still good…and for how long?
Please post reply for all. Thank you!

Hank May 23, 2008 at 8:04 am

We have a GIANT bin of stuffed toys that our kids never played with and we’d hate to just throw them in the garbage. We’ve been trying to find someone who’d give them to kids but haven’t had any luck. Is this address and program still active? Thanks.

Bill Caraccio July 1, 2008 at 1:58 pm

Hello, please confirm the program is still active and the contact names and address are still correct.
Also, since there seems to be so much interest in donating, have any additional programs like this been formed in Iraq (or Afghanistan), that will support a different community. If so, please send the address and contact info. Thanks for responding!

Maggie Fernandez July 5, 2008 at 6:29 am

Hello, PLease confirm that the program is still active and that information listed here is correct. My sister and I have stuffed animals we would like to donate. Thanks.

Administrator July 5, 2008 at 9:36 am

Hey y’all. I say go ahead and send them to the address for Michael or Natalie above. That’s my best guess!

Cathryn Reagan, Project Director AM SAFE July 21, 2008 at 11:47 pm

The most recent update on the address is:

Ms. Tonya Myrick
USACE-GRS
APO-AE
09331

You might also go to beaniesforbaghdad.com. They provide you with up to date addresses for supplying toys to our military in Iraq, Afghanistand and Kosovo.

Kate Coughlin November 17, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Are you still accepting donations? I have a TON of children’s toys I would like to donate.

Susan December 1, 2008 at 8:08 am

I too am wondering if toy and stuffed animal donations are still being accepted. Also does anyone know if the post office still does the free mailing kit?

Stacie January 22, 2009 at 2:33 pm

I also am wondering the same as well. I hate to throw all of these stuffed animals away.

Courtneay January 22, 2009 at 9:27 pm

I am searching for a charity to collect gently used stuffed animals for my son’s Preschool class. Are you still accepting donations? I am willing to pay for the postage to Iraq, we just need a place to donate the stuffed animals.

Thanks!

Leslie February 2, 2009 at 9:07 am

Is this program still active and what is the most current address? I noticed the last one given was ‘08. Now that we’re in the new year I figured I’d check it out! WHAT A FABULOUS THING THIS IS. Liz March 14, 2009 at 9:02 pm

djay September 27, 2009 at 2:03 pm

just want to make sure that the address you have as of July 2009 is still current for Edmay. I have been a teddy bear collector for about 25 years and need to cut back on my collection. I would love to know that my teddy bears are in loving hands. Thank you.

Maria October 8, 2009 at 1:12 pm

Is this mailing address still current to send stuffed animals to?

Megan Dunlap October 21, 2009 at 6:55 am

I’d like to know, too, if this address is still valid and if they still want stuffed animals. I have TONS that I would like to see go to a good cause. Thanks!

Hello, Having a practical way to contribute to peace was what I was looking for this morning. I am an egg artist and had an idea to have our local Girl Scout troop create decorated eggs for Easter and send them to the children in Iraq. Our kids constantly hear about war and doing something for peace might help. An egg shell is a fragile thing and it is symbolic of how fragile human life is, plus it is the promise of rebirth.
