After a few seasons of rain boots that fell apart within two weeks (I am not exaggerating, this happened to two pairs!), I decided to splurge on high quality rain boots for my son, Holden.
These look very cool — black with spiders! — and they are warm and high-quality. In fact, they can handle temperatures down to thirty degrees below zero. Ummm, that’s where I went a little above and beyond. It doesn’t even snow where we live; it only rains. Cold weather here is about forty degrees. What the heck was I thinking? I dropped about $60 on these boots.
I sent him to school in these butt-kicking boots and his feet were super sweaty all day. Sorry kid. On the plus side, we’ll be all set when we go visit friends and family in the Real Winter. I can’t wait to drag these kids Out East for the holidays. Maybe we’ll finally make it to Tahoe for sledding. Gosh, do we have to go back to Copenhagen to make this investment worthwhile?
If you live where it’s actually cold, I highly recommend. They come in many cool patterns. Buy sweet Bogs spider boots on Amazon >>
For Milo, I couldn’t stomach another $60 on rain boots so I was very happy to find these Kamik rain boots for about $20. They look super hearty (not build an igloo hearty but splash through the puddles hearty like we need).
We plan to try to give them a little more personality with Sharpie drawings and maybe a paint-job. They come in navy blue and pink. Find these practical Kamik boots on Amazon >>
If you’re still wondering about those terrible fall-apart boots, I haven’t decided whether or not to tell you which brand. Should I? Shouldn’t I? Do you want to guess?

Are the fall apart boots from Target? We’ve had mixed results with those, but most pairs have lasted until they were outgrown.
The rain boots were from my mom so I can’t point to a certain store. I do believe this brand is carried at Target though.
I would be interested in knowing. I have been thinking about rainboots for my two and a half year old but I just don’t feel like spending money on an unknown quantity.
Oh, oh I want to know! I wish I would have read this 2 days ago before we bought rain boots for me and my son…. Also, how did they fall apart? Soles come undone? details, please!
Love those Bogs! Even here in the wintry Tundra of Brooklyn, the kids are supposed to change into “real shoes” at school so they might just be up our alley. And cheaper than Hunter!
i’m curious to know which brand falls apart. boots are on my must-purchase-soon list since winter and rainy weather is fast approaching here and we can’t swing $60 for boots…i’d love to know which kinds to avoid.
Ok, the faulty pairs were made by the big guys: Western Chief rainboots. I had to wonder if they made a special lower quality version of their ubiquitous rainboots when these fell apart so quickly. The problem with both sets was that the top/front/ankle split wide open.
We had another set of rainboots that was amazing, but after 3 years of hard core use, there is no brand or label left that I can read.
i’ve been trying to decide which rain boots to buy my 2-year-old son for the past couple weeks (of course the rains have stopped for now so no big rush). anyhow, i’ve looked at western chief, kidorable, and pluie pluie (because our local independent stores here in oakland carry those). the reviews of western chief have been consistenly uneven, with many many folks talking about how after only a couple weeks they crack and leak water inside. they have them super cheap on sierra trading post, which is tempting, but i think i’ll pass due to their lack of longevity.
Nanda, I’d love to hear how the pluie pluie ones hold up.
Ack! I just bought my son the Wrstrrn Chief frog boots, raincoat & umbrella. Thanks for letting us know. I just wish I had seen this earlier.
I have rainboots from Target, so does a friend. I got them when my 6.5 yr old was about 2.5. They’re still around the house & have also gone through little sis…and we’re going to pass them on to someone else, now. My friend’s are a size 9…and her kid is now a 12…so however long that is, lol. Mine were the Miss Spider kind – with a bug face on them…hers are Hello Kitty.
