What?! Yep, a pickle spear for a baby. I discovered this little trick while Holden was sitting in my lap and I was trying to eat a slice of pizza. I handed him the pickle spear figuring he’d lick it, make a face and get on with grabbing for my lunch. Well, he loved it!
Recently, I was discussing this unorthodox “food” with some other rookie mom friends and 3 out of 4 of them also gave their toothless kids pickles to make ‘em happy.
Stick a pickle spear in that greedy hand and watch closely to make sure no chunks are gnawed or bitten off.

how could I not give this a 5 out of 5?
oh yes, my little guy got his first pickle when he was about 9 months old – he LOVED it.
Some babies are so funny with stuff like that! I gave Mason a lemon wedge once, sat back and waited with my camera to get that scrunched-up face– only to have him devour it like it was candy. Not even a flinch.
Pickles though… we don’t eat those often in our house, I’ll have to try it next time we’re out at a restaurant and get one with a sandwich.
Ohmygosh!
I never would have given my kids a pickle when they were babies….too much sodium!! Wow.
My 9-month-old LOVES dill pickle spears! I was just as surprised.
I LOVE THIS BLOG!!!!!! I’m new to the blogging world myself and stumbled across this site! LOVE IT!
Wow, Momma Sunshine, you turn your nose down at everyone… one little pickle isn’t going to kill the kid.
My 10 month old LOVES pickles, I microwave them to make them all juicy and put it in a little mesh bag. He sucks all the juice and smiles.
Way too much salt. If they’re not supposed to have cow’s milk until at least 12 months, a pickle is way over the top for sodium content.
So is it best to let them suck on a whole pickle or just a spear?
This is great! The last couple of days I was out of town with my 6 month old. I wanted to eat lunch and didn’t want to do the fast food thing just out of ease of not taking my DS into a place. So we went ventured out. Of course he got upset and was grabbing at my sandwich. So out of hesitation and thinking he wouldn’t like it I gave him the pickle to try… He loved it instantly!!!
That’s lucky, Sarah! I hope it means he’ll be open to a variety of flavors and textures!
