Activity #255: Feed your kid on the floor

Eating cheese off the floorThanks to Rookie Dad Ryan for this tip. If you’re getting tired of picking up Cheerios that have been flung over the highchair tray, feed your older baby directly on the floor.

I noticed that Holden will make a pass under the dining room table and grab anything lingering from the most recent meal.

My friend, Jeanine, takes it a step further and actually leaves little pieces of teryaki tofu (or actual fruit) on the floor so that Pepper will think it’s forbidden fruit. Pepper also enjoys lint and the occasional ladybug.

And isn’t this (even slightly) better than your kid picking up some mystery food?

Great idea.

On rainy days when my kids were younger we sometimes would all eat on the floor on a blanket and have lunch as a teddy bears picnic.

Funny. I literally just finished picking up itty bitty pieces of squash from a first time on-floor feeding experiment with my nearly 7 month-old who has it in for solid food. Thought I’d try and trick him, since he loves to put things in his mouth that he finds on the floor. No cigar though, he figured out it was food.

As laid back as I’ve been raising my first, I don’t know how I missed this. What a great idea! I think I’ll have to implement a mat or something (when I say I’m laid back, I also mean that I don’t mop frequently.) when my second daughter gets old enough to hang with this idea.
BTW- I just found this site about a week or so ago, and I LOVE IT! What a great idea!
