How to make a paper welcome banner for a party

Close followers of this blog probably have guessed that we have someone new to welcome into the Rookie Moms family this week. Details coming soon! (UPDATE: Photo on Facebook!)

For now, allow me to entertain you with a post about how I spent too much money on craft supplies and what you could do differently.

It is entirely possible that I got the idea to use negative space for the letters of my banner from a display in the Paper Source. I [insert enthusiastic expletive] love that store. On the other hand, I kinda hate it, too, because I always spend too much money and end up feeling like a crazy person when I get home.

In this case, I’m not beating myself up too much because I did get three banners out of the materials I purchased and some of the stuff I’ll be using for a long long time.

For Scarlett’s 4th birthday party

For Jennifer’s cancer journey

For Heather’s baby shower

I used the Silhouette machine (sent to me for testing by Silhouette America and I am totally in love!) to cut out the letters from circle-shaped paper I bought at Paper Source.

The machine can cut any font you want, which is amazing.

Then, I put a contrasting color of circle behind the one with the cut letter and double hole punched them. (Yes, I bought a special double hole puncher. Sucker!)

Finally, I threaded ribbon through each set of circles.

The circles are totally unnecessary. Any card stock will do and if you have a circle hole punch (which I have already told you to buy, right?) then you could make your own circles.

P.S. For the punctuation mark after Scarlett’s name (a firecracker to honor her July 4 birthday) I simply used the asterisk from a fun font.
