Activity #523: Collect the alphabet

When I saw this on girl with fabric’s website, I immediately asked to borrow the idea. Turns out she saw a variation of it on Ohdeedoh, but either way, I think there are countless creative ways to riff on this idea.

You might set it up as a nursery decoration – the alphabet in it’s entirety – as fabric girl has done.

Or, make it an ongoing project to work on with your preschooler – whenever you’re out and about or on a special vacation, finding a letter to add to your letter collection would be a little thrill. Any reason to take Julian to thrift stores is exciting for me, and we have a bunch of awesome salvage stores around here that sell old signs. Surely a good place for us to start.

If you want to just do the whole thing upfront, you’ll probably have to buy and decorate some letters yourself. Fabric girl used mod-podge and papers. I might try fabric. Other ideas?

Whitney, I have a bunch of cute fabric remnants (and I bet you do too unless you recently purged your whole house) — we should do this soon!

This is a great idea for all those little onsies that your baby grows out of so quickly. Someone suggested to me that I cut them up and make a patchwork blanket out of them, but I don’t sew. But, I can cut them up and mod podge them onto letters!

I think your blog is great! Write about what you want to write about. The morning session of “Your Passion Never Gets Old” was great!

Hi, you just were in the BlogHer seesion about monetization. A child’s clothing site that was looking to advertise recently is Skimbaco.com She is in the middle of a cross country move right now and might not get back to you right away. But check her out. She is also on Twitter as @skimbaco. Her IRL name is Katja Presnal. Good Luck!

I found an Etsy store (don’t remember which one0 where they sold letters made of the bendable craft wire bent into the letter of choice, wrapped in different fabric remnants then decorated with a few buttons or other notions and a simple rick rack or ribbon loop to hang on the wall. I was going to see what I could do with the idea cutting letters from cardboard and wrapping in fabric…the kids initials as ornaments and oversized for wall decor.

Thanks, Jennifer! I looked for what you were describing and found this one with wire letters that were hard for me to define as either urban or rustic. Wordmeisters, help me out!
