thank you!

oh, that is a legitimate concern. We actually didn't find out her gender until she arrived and we both sorta thought our boy name choice was lame. We were glad we got to use the more interesting name choice! So, hopefully we'll come up with something interesting before the next one arrives.

We named her Magnolia May. The day we found out we were pregnant, we went out to lunch and thought of names. Of course, we wikipedia'd Texas city names and started there. We didn't come up with the name that day, but one day Magnolia came to be. It's the name of a city in Texas (where we're from), the state flower and state tree of Mississippi (where we're currently stationed) and just beautiful.

Her middle name May came because my husband and I have lucky Mays. We met in May, we got our new long-awaited assignment in May, we lived on a street named 'Lucky Mays' and we just decided that May was a good month for us.

so, she's Maggie May. And mostly my husband came up with it.

Sophie was a name that was on our long list, but even during labor my husband and I were still throwing names around. It wasn't till after she was born, and my husband was staring at her when he came up to me and said, "her name is Sophie," with such conviction that I couldn't disagree. It wasn't till a few days later he told me that as he was staring at her he subconsciously called her Sophie 3 times before realizing it. He said she just looked like a Sophie and I couldn't agree more.

Her middle name is a Korean name that I asked my parents to pick out. This way she's got ties to both her American and Korean roots.

I love soccer. Love it. There is one soccer player that is my favorite, Gabriel Omar Batistuta. Also, he's beautiful (and has since retired). My son, Gabriel, is named after him. My husband insisted that we don't give him a middle name, otherwise his name would be Gabriel Omar. I even put his soccer card in Gabi's baby book. However, when anyone older than us asks where I got his name, in order to spare a lengthy explanation, I say he's named after the Archangel Gabriel.

And then there's my daughter: Meike. No one has ever heard that name and people think she's a boy: Micah. I saw it in a German movie and fell in love with it. When I got pregnant, there was never any other option for names, it was always Meike Teresa (after my grandmother, Maria Teresa). I looked it up and thought it was a German form of Michelle, which is also my favorite women's soccer player (Michelle Akers). It turns out, it's a short form of Mary, so she is completely named after my grandmother.

I forgot to mention the intense family pressure we received to name our baby George after my husband, his father, his grandfather, my grandfather (not to mention George Harrison)! We compromised with a middle name tribute to my husband and his grandfather.

My MIL seemed frustrated that I was not caving in to the lobbying and pressure that she caved into 30-odd years ago.

When we were looking at names, my husband's friend was emailing him lists of names every couple of days and told him she would keep it up until we chose some. Axton happened to be one of the names on her list that made it to our list. We both really liked it and kept going back to it. We wanted a name that was unique where he wouldn't have 50 other kids his age with the same name in the same town [we both have very common names and are kind of sick of it].

His middle names, Marius, is my grandfather's middle and was his father's middle name and his grandfather's first name. It goes even further back than that in our family. I knew I wanted to represent my family through his middle name, and this was the one that worked the best.

We had a list of 3 names picked out, and decided for sure on his on our way to the hospital. And when he was born, Axton Marius just fit perfectly!

Oh! I feel better after reading the blog post and comments and realizing that not everyone has a touching/meaningful story to go with their name. Our daughter is Lorelei--yes, we heard it on the Gilmore Girls (although we spell it the traditional way). And I do get a bit flustered when people ask if we named her based on the show. And my MIL.... well, you should have seen the incredibly nasty email she sent when we told her we decided on Lorelei as her first name.

Now there is a meaningful part for her middle name, Anne. Both my mom's my own middle names are Anne and my sister's first name is Anne. So that was a nice connection to keep. I'm not sure if we'll try to incorporate Anne (or some version) into any future daughter's names or not.

We named our daughter Zaida, a name that has raised some eyebrows among family, friends & strangers. We first found it in one of the countless name books I poured over. It wasn't until months later, (3 weeks before baby was due) while discussing it with my partner's grandmother that we learned it was the first name of his great-grandmother. (Few in the family knew, as she went by Myrtle her entire life).

We liked the name enough on its own to go with it, but finding the serendipitous family connection sealed the deal.
What's been interesting in the months since her birth is seeing the reactions of people when we explain the origin of her name. If we say "we picked it because we liked it" we get a much cooler reception that when we say "it's her great-great-grandmother's name." But actually, both are true.

When I was pregnant with my daughter I got no rest. She was busy day and night. Some nights I would wake up to something that felt like a drum roll in my stomach. She tossed and rolled all the time. Her father and I both have 2 American Indian tribes in our backgrounds so we decided to go with an American Indian name. My mother found the name Aleshanee during my 3rd trimester. It was perfect. It means "she plays all of the time." When she was born she continued to prove we chose the right name for her.

Never in a million years would I have thought I would name my son Leo. But, I couldn't fight it. It was just his name.

His middle names, however, hold meaning. James is the name of both my grandfathers, and is a family name on my husband's side, as well. And Edward is the name of a character in the play "You Can't Take it With You." My husband and I met while doing this play, and he was Ed. I was Alice :)

(This is a great topic, by the way. I love hearing these name stories!)
