Love it! Like you, I have looked at my long-term hopes for my kids and wondered if my day to day life is supporting those hopes. But you know, when it comes down to it all I really hope and expect for them is that they're functional, independent, happy adults in whatever way fits their interests and personalities most.

This whole Tiger Mom thing has definitely encouraged me to consider some of the ways I'm too easy on my kids, but I'm also never going to be the mom who forces hours a day of practice on a kid who really doesn't want to do it, and I think that's OK too.

Thanks for the comment, Steph. I think the co-author of Nurtureshock brought this point home on @katiecouric yesterday (for anyone who has 5 minutes.... the video is long but her point is in the first part of it)

How fun that you're adding video - makes me feel like I'm getting a sneak peek at the back stage of your blog :).

Your comment about being totally immersed in the empathetic side of parenting really got me thinking. My kids are really little so I've just recently started delving into the parenting books and I am definitely in the same place with Gottman's emotional coaching and the "love and logic" books.

The point that you made about communicating your high expectations reminded me of a chapter from Nurture Shock on the inverse power of praise and its description of how Eastern mothers are better at conveying high expectations while remaining loving while western mothers tend to ignore their children's failures and struggles in an attempt to protect their self-esteem - which ultimately leaves them without any tools to address failure and set backs.

Sorry for the rambling, just thought you had some great points today!
