The other day as one of us was yelling at the rest of us, it struck me that throwing tantrums in our new house builds shared memories and brings us closer to creating our HOME. I started thinking of all the little and big memories that go into creating a family home so I made a list for the kids to see. Of course I did.
It’s a bit crumply because I made it from packing materials. Some day, we’ll find the normal paper.
After taping it to the kitchen wall (and making everyone pinky-swear to NOT Sharpie on the wall), I thought of more and more ideas that were not appropriate to add for one reason or another. So, if I can just share a few more with you:
- Having Christmas here (too far away!)
- Enduring nighttime wakeups + cleaning up pee accidents (don’t want to encourage them)
- Spilling/breaking/vomiting-on something (see above)
- Making lists about random stuff
— check!
What would you put on your list of making a house into a home?

For me, answering the door for trick-or-treaters on Halloween means, “Hello! I live here!”
Hang up pictures/art.
Host an ice cream social (great way to meet neighbors).
Have friends over for a BBQ
Go away on vacation and come back to our home!
Play hide and seek! It’s a great way to explore the new home.
Hmm.. I don’t know… maybe the holidays? some big milestone. Lord willing, this will be the house Maggie potty trains in. The last house was the one where we had our first baby.
We move so much (military), sometimes I don’t think a place feels like home until we leave and I remember it.
I do love having friends over, so I guess it feels more like ‘my home’ when we invite people over.
First off, I love Zachery’s pizza.
My addition is “Change a room. (paint, tile, decorate totally different than it was before)
I guess when I invite my family and friends over for lunch or dinner.
Have my sons birthday party at home and not in a hall
the love of family makes a house a home.
true, sakshi.
Since I was thinking that celebrating holidays and birthdays make it a home, we’ve got Thanksgiving under our belts now. Christmas on the way!
