I was kvetching on twitter the other day about how my middle is expanding while my rings are getting loose. What gives?
Knowing I recently weaned, Annie from PhD in Parenting shared her brilliantly geektastic assessment of the calories and breastfeeding roller coaster. Though she doesn’t exactly explain why the gut is ample but the fingers are boney, I loved reading her math-heavy investigation and wanted to share it. Apparently, I was able to consume an additional 230,000 calories this past year and I need to learn some new habits.
Is anyone else’s paunch growing while other parts shrink?

Yes! I actually weaned about 9 months ago, but my middle is paunchier (is that a word) than ever! I’ve been running like a crazy (momma) woman 5 days a week for the last 3 months–semi training for a 15K run and simultaneously trying to slim down a little. It’s a strange situation to look a little heavier (in the middle particularly) now than I did 1 month after my daughter (2nd child) was born, no?
Hi Angela,
You may be doing the wrong ab work out! if you start right up doing sit-ups and crunches with out really strengthening the transverse abs first, your outer abs won’t be supported well and some women look several months pregnant still. I have found that I have had more trouble this time around.
YES!!! I held on to the last 10lbs until I was done nursing.
Hear, hear! I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant, but have a paunch I never had before. No matter what I do, I can’t seem to lose it.
The smaller part of me? The bubbies! They deflated after 8 months of BF.
Trying to convince the husband to let me do lipo and a boob job. He’s not biting, yet.
Meredith, You have a good man. Better that he love you how you are.
And yeah, my fingers are not the only part of me that is shrinking. Sigh.
DS is 18 months old. I dieted, I ran, I walked, I did whatever I could. i weigh the same as pre-pregnancy. my legs are thinner, my back is thinner (as in, im a 32 instead of a 34 now, cup size the same) BUT MY TUMMY IS STILL THERE. now we’re TTC #2, so i basically give up. i’ll try again next round
I’ve had tremendous success just tracking exercise and food. While I was overweight before I got pregnant, I’ve lost it all plus some by making sure my calories in are always less than my calories out. 55+ lbs (and 4 sizes) down, and almost to my goal
