This was such a great read! My son and I just moved from Boston to Honolulu and it might just sound crazy to say but I miss Bean Town terribly! The accents, the driving (though insanely mad), Newbury Street, Brookline, Harvard Square and especially the North End. When my son and I return for a visit we'll have to use this as a guide. I never knew Brookline had a farmer's market.
Thanks for posting this.

I am glad you re-posted this. I just moved to CT and am looking forward to day trips to Boston with my 2.5yo. I heard about the park and the aquarium, but the farmers market sounds fun and I didn't realized Barefoot books so close (I am such a groupie, I have an associate's link on my website.) And after learning about flight cancellations in a smaller city this weekend, we are going to fly out of Boston a lot. Thank you!

You can get free or steeply discounted passes to a lot of museums and attractions through your local public library. You check out the pass with your card, like a book, and you have to return it by the next day.

Just a note about the MFA (for folks with older kids). Admission for children 7-17 is free after 3PM on Wednesdays. They are open until 9:45PM.

I'd also like to suggest the Boston Children's Museum and the Boston Museum of Science. Neither is free (the Children's Museum is cheaper), but both offer family membership options for families of varying sizes. This is a great option for families who might want to visit a few times a year. I believe the other attractions mentioned offer family passes as well.
