Having worked on a piece of research about what types of new media moms consume, I know that podcasts are not very popular among our demographic. Regardless, I want to share my enthusiasm for them. The listening habit I developed about three months ago has turned me into a regular exerciser, and it’s entirely due to podcasts. I think maybe this means I’m old, my preference to listen to people talk rather than pumping energetic beats through my ear buds. It doesn’t much matter, because it keeps me going, and that’s a good thing.
After I drop my children off at school, I take a one-mile walk up a steep hill, while listening to Freakonomics, Here’s The Thing, The Moth, or For Crying Out Loud. Often, I get so immersed in the stories that I don’t want my walk to end. Looking forward to these audio treats motivates me to exercise more regularly than I ever have before. Jillian Michaels would be proud. And sometimes I listen to her podcast, too.
I also listen to The Kitchen Hour, with Meagan Francis, a fellow parenting blogger. I’m calling this one out separately because of Meagan’s intent, to help parents enjoy their time in the kitchen more. She discovered that when she carved out space for her previously dreaded pre-dinner kitchen time, and added some elements to look forward to, including listening to podcasts or music, it became a happy ritual. I have not adopted Meagan’s practice, but I can see how it makes sense, since I had the same experience with walking. Because of the spirit of her podcast, I have also begun firing it up when I am doing a kitchen task I dread, putting away groceries. Having the companionship of two moms chit chatting in the background (Meagan usually has a guest on her show) makes the time fly by.
I know there’s also a whole world of comedy out there in podcast-land, waiting to be discovered by me. I started with You Had To Be There, hosted by two female comedians in their late-20s. I would walk through the Berkeley Hills laughing out loud during my morning hikes. Sometimes embarrassing, but it put me in a good mood in the morning. I’ve gotten tired of that one, but through their weekly guests, I became aware that nearly every working comedian has a podcast.
Do you listen to podcasts? Which ones do you like and when do you listen?
Oh, I almost forgot, the app I use on my phone to find and listen to these shows is called Downcast.

I love podcasts too and I’m always on the lookout for new ones. If I listen to a podcast long enough, I’ve found that I eventually feel like I know the people talking and I start thinking of them as friends. (Friends who have never met me and who would be freaked out if I met them and treated them that way…)
P.S. I love your new layout!
Thanks for the shout-out
And that reminds me that I want you two to come on as guests!
I listen to the Simple Mom podcast with Tsh Oxenreider, America’s Test Kitchen Radio (with the editor of Cook’s Illustrated) and the Smart Passive Income podcast with Pat Flynn, depending on my mood. They seem to cover all the bases, though by the end of a long week of washing dishes, I’m usually out of content
We are a podcast household! My husband listens to them during his commute to work and I often listen to them while doing the dishes or walking home. My son even listens to some at night before bed.
Here are some of our favorites for the grown ups:
Planet Money, This American Life, All Songs Considered, Judge John Hodgman, Super Dad Show
And for the kiddos:
BBC Learning Listen and Play and The Story Home
The Power Down Podcast is the first one I ever listened to and now I am intrigued. Thanks for this post, and your site looks lovely.
I used to have a long commute. Podcasts are what got me through it as audible.com got too expensive.
1) This American Life – entertainment and you feel a little intellectually stimulated at the same time.
2) Manic Mommies – super great, have become a little less relevant as their kids have grown up (older than mine) but still good stuff
Tech Tuesday: let’s talk about podcasts http://t.co/qqswn5kOrl (@meaganfrancis @freakonomics, and more!)
Brittany & Meredith Live was one of my favorites but they haven’t published in a long time.
I am a This American Life junkie. I have listened to every episode! They have an app where you can mark favorites and mark which ones you’ve heard.
If you want to start with a recent one, I would recommend Dopplegangers #484 (about a rumor they might use pig rectums as imitation calamari), or What Doesn’t Kill You #476 (about a shark attack).
It’s hard to narrow down one favorite of 500 but #319 And the Call Was Coming from the Basement about a rabid raccoon attack is unforgettable.
And as California girls, you would really want to hear #370 Ruining It for the Rest of Us, Act One. Heartbreaking story about a kid who caught measles in San Diego because of one unvaccinated child.
@Laura, I also listen to This American Life. The shark attack episode stayed with me for weeks!
The recent episode about Gangs in the Chicago High School was so stomach churning and heart wrenching, I couldn’t finish it. I mentioned it to Ryan last night and he said he couldn’t finish it either.
@Whitney and @Laura, Alec turned me on to This American Life years ago. It’s the one I would listen to when I had a long commute. I miss it. I don’t think I could workout with Ira Glass, but I enjoy our other times together.
I’m a huge fan of the How Stuff Works podcasts, specifically the Stuff Mom Never Told You podcast as well as the Stuff You Missed in History Class. I HATED history throughout high school, but I finally had an amazing professor in college who renewed my interest in it. This podcast makes history very interesting!
I also listened to a lot of pregnancy podcasts when I was pregnant, like Preggie Pals.
@Bri those are all new to me. I will check them out!
We love freakonomics!
