Activity #580: String up straws for a preschooler’s necklace

This week, I took a batch of my kids’ outgrown clothes to the second-hand store in our neighborhood and earned myself a whopping $7.50. I promptly spent it in the store on a Melissa & Doug necklace-making kit for Julian. He loves wearing costumes and jewelry and we had been talking recently about making necklaces.

He used almost all the beads in his store-bought kit on two necklaces, but we still had two necklace cords left, so we made our own “beads” out of some IKEA straws. I’m thinking this is a pretty good rainy day trick to have in your back pocket for the age 3+ crowd. And, it doesn’t take a craft genius to execute.

This is a great activity for a preschooler. My son is into the beads right now too. Next time, I’ll give you $10 for your hand-me-downs and some straws, k?

Totally adorable, and he looks so pleased with his coolness. I’ll tuck this idea away for when my son develops fine motor coordination…
