Alison's comment about parenting books contradicting each other hit a very strong chord with me! I found that out with my first baby, and nearly tore my hair out trying to work out which "expert" was right! What I began to see, after a while, is that all the books agreed (more or less) on the very important stuff (like not giving your baby Aspirin, lest it promote Reyes Syndrome), but most of the rest of the info was just the author's personal opinion based upon their own personal experiences. After a while I simply began to weed out and dispose of the books that didn't resonate with my own experience, opinions or philosophies; this left me with a core of books whose advice I could trust, and not get torn apart by a slew of mixed messages.
