Eek. My firstborn rookie baby boy is heading off to preschool. This is the shopping list as given to me by his new teacher:
photos for his cubby
journal
slippers
small sleeping bag
lunch box
diapers
2 boxes of wipes
Anyone have any tips? Mostly, I’m looking for guidance on a mini sleeping bag and slippers because I’ve heard that the laptoplunch bento box is the way to go for toddlers in Berkeley. Anyone tried that?
Thanks y’all!

I use the bento box for myself, and many many many of the kids in my preschool classroom use them or the stainless steel carriers. Be sure to put your child’s name on whatever you use in some sort of glaringly obvious kind of way though- some of the moms in my class got together and had a crafts day for the kids to decorate their lunchboxes so the kids had control and after that noone lost a lunchbox to another again…. as for the sleeping bag if you have a sewing machine it’s really easy to make one out of a favorite twin or toddler bed sized comforter- just fold up to about the shoulders and stich up the sides if you want to get really fancy you can stitch a travel sized pillow to the head area just put the pillow in a pillowcase (or use a piece of cloth about 2 inches bigger on all sides than the pillow) and stitch around.
Please let us know if you find a sleeping bag … I’m not crafty enough to make one but desperately need one! I did see a really cute one at Pottery Barn but I definately can’t afford to spend $60 on something that just may go home with another kid.
P.S. My daughter wears Robeez as “slippers” for school. They never get worn outside.
Laptop lunchbox ordered.
I found a great deal on a kid’s sleeping bag at REI-outlet.com ($23) and since Holden is pushing 37″ I got a kids’ bag and not a toddler’s bag.
Ooh, and thanks to Whitney’s post about Vincent shoes, I found some happy face slippers.
I’ll be sure to let y’all know how these work out for us!
Hah! I am posting a comment. No more lurking for me!!
Glad you ordered the laptop lunchbox. Plastic or metal is definitely the way to go for lunchboxes that have to weather the ups and downs of preschool. Vinyl is definitely OUT — it stinks to high heaven once after just a week or two of encounters with smooshed PB&J, blueberries, or yogurt.
As for sleeping bags, I’ll put in a pitch for the Bazoongi bags. They are indestructible and look new every time we wash it. Very well made, but not as much money as PBK.
