Meredith is a grad school dropout, military wife, stay at home, over-thinking mom who started a podcast and blog over at overthinkingmom.com to amuse herself and, hopefully, others. She shared her five favorite babycentric inventions with us. If you’d like to share yours, send an email to moms at rookiemoms dot com.

I’ve been a mom for less than eight months, but I’ve already donated six or seven trash bags full of baby items and clothing. This purge was not a result of my anti-consumerist tendencies, not in the least. I’m a sucker for a good marketing campaign and the ever so subtle bad mom guilt that creeps upon us when we don’t buy every possible piece of baby gear. When my daughter was four or five months old, I had a horrible vision of turning into a mommy hoarder (Wouldn’t that be a lovely reality television show), hence the trash bags full of unneeded baby stuff.
After getting rid of three out of five baby slings, one out of three strollers, a co-sleeper, a bouncy seat, and more, I’m now more in love than ever before with the material items we decided to keep. Looking back on the last eight months, these are five of my family’s rookie mom essentials.
1. Fisher Price My Little Lamb Cradle ‘n Swing: My daughter had colic and the only saving grace was this swing. We bought every imaginable “colic cure,” including a compact disc with the sound of a vacuum cleaner on repeat, but I repeat, ONLY THE SWING WORKED. We used it to help her nap until she was six months old.

2. Ergo Baby Carrier: A lot of people laud this carrier and for good reason. It saves your back, and your baby can cuddle up to you
without a lot of complicated wrapping. I only wish I had purchased the infant insert so I could have used it from birth.
3. Chicco Travel Seat Hook On Chair: Colic equals months of not leaving the house with your screaming baby. This means no peaceful restaurant trips or outings. I thought our public eating moment had passed us by, but then I saw a cousin using this chair. As soon as my daughter started solids at six months, she became our travel eating companion.

4. Evenflo Exersaucer: Immediately after buying the exersaucer off Craigslist, I felt guilt. I assumed this was another new mom trend I was blindly following in an effort to overstimulate and distance my child. Boy, was I wrong. Sometimes a baby needs to be corralled and amused while a mom takes out laundry, makes dinner, or uses the restroom. It will be a sad day when the magic of the exersaucer wears off.
5. Boppy (plus extra covers): This is the one and only baby item I used hours after giving birth and still use multiple times a day eight months later. I refuse to travel without it. Whether I nurse or my husband bottle feeds, the boppy makes our laps cuddly and comfortable! Why extra covers? After a legendary simultaneous poop and spit-up incident, I learned sometimes more is better.

When the magic of the Excersaucer wears off, try a Jumperoo. It will buy you a few more months of being able to have them in one spot before they refuse to be still any longer.
i got the boppy because i thought i was supposed to, but i hated it. i had to use 5 or more extra pillows in addition to the boppy. then i discovered mybrestfriend nursing pillow/table type thing. it hooks around your waist and it was literally the only thing i needed to nurse emma. unless i was in public then i also needed a nursing cover. i still have the boppy because sometimes its cute to put her in it for pictures but thats about it.
swaddle blankets were my best friend for four months until she decided she wanted her arms and legs free. my all time favorite ones were koalakuddles. these worked better than any other swaddle blanket ive ever tried. http://www.koalakuddles.com/kk_products.php

I agree with everything mentioned, including my brest fried, and will add a wipes warmer. I know it sounds silly, but we have cloth wipes to go with the cloth diapers and it saves a step of having to wet the wipe with spray with a wriggling baby on the changing table. The added bonus is that my now-speaking daughter doesn’t complain about cold wipes.
I’ve noticed people either love the boppy or find it useless. I have both the boppy and my brest friend (I over-prepare for everything) and loved my brest friend in the hospital, but found the boppy a better fit afterwards. Maybe it has something to do with lap positioning and chair choice. Either way, I can’t believe I still use the boppy every single day. I think I’ll need a boppy weaning at some point.
I think the only time I tried the boppy was with my fifth child (at the time she was born the boppy was getting really popular) I don’t recall even hearing about it when I had the first four babies. For them I just used pillows. The funny thing is the boppy was great, but it didn’t last long in the chaos of my “house of horrors” I’m sorry I meant to say “house of toddlers”. The boppey was popped(ied)
My baby HATED being in a swing. I found the travel seat to be a pain. I got a floppy seat and use that …easier to carry and covers the seats in the restaurant and grocery store cart. I’m with Marissa on the swaddle blanket. My baby calmed right down when in the swaddle. The boppy was useless for me. It sits in the closet still in its original cover. Good job on purging the other useless baby stuff. It all takes up so much room!!
Too funny. Goes to show every new mom’s five faves is different. Uh oh. Does this mean every baby’s five faves will be different?
My son is almost 5 months old and that specific swing has been our best friend!!! Our problem now is trying to break him of the swing and get him to sleep in the crib…
Jodi – we’re in the same boat. My daughter Grace loved the swing, but perhaps developed a swinging addiction! Still trying to convince her that her crib is great too! Good luck!

I would add a breast pump and hands free breast pump bra for anyone who wants to avoid tired hands, shoulders, and back. Pacifiers also helped my baby fall asleep on his own and stay asleep longer!
