Taking oneself and a baby to a baby-friendly movie theater is one of our favorite milestones of maternity leave. It requires you to leave the house, challenges you to practice feeding and changing in a public location, but also provides the support of a dark room and fellow new moms (aka crying babies) to remind you that you’re not the only one doing this.
We are always on the lookout for new mommy movie showings and were delighted to learn that the AMC theater chain has partnered with pregnancy mega-site The Bump to present Bring Your Baby matinees.
These special showings will be on the first Tuesday of every month and feature a baby-friendly environment: brighter lights, lower volume, and boobs, bottles, bulky strollers, and crying are welcome.

I’m so torn about this – I really want to love it! (I tried the “take your newborn to the movie” thing, from your list of things to do with an infant, but I made a rookie mistake, choosing a crowded evening showing of Horrible Bosses with my 6 week old, and getting a LOT a dirty looks!) But now that this is finally coming to a theatre near me, my son is 10 months old. That’s too old, I assume, for a baby to be unaware of the movie on the huge screen in front of him, right? The first one of this series is Hunger Games! It says right on the ad “MPAA Rating: PG-13 for intense violent thematic material and disturbing images involving teens”! Where do you stand on the appropriate age range for this whole “bring your baby matinee” idea, considering the popular advice these days is little to no tv at all before the 2nd birthday? (We put on one Yo Gabba Gabba a day for my son, after breakfast, and that’s it, and then my husband and I watch our shows after Quinn has gone to bed.)
btw – I first thought this said “Bring your baby MANATEE”. That resulted in a bafling couple of seconds. lol
What about UT?! We dont have AMC that I know of!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been dying to see Hunger Games and was seriously debating taking a 12-day old to a regular matinee. This will make me feel much less guilty if he cries in the theatre, although between the noise and nursing him, I doubt he’ll even be awake for much of it.
