Activity #477: Make your own TasteBook

by Whitney on October 24, 2007

in Crafty, Eating, Mommy, Toddler

You may have noticed that Heather is really into meal planning and finding solutions to getting dinner on the table before putting the baby to bed. I wish I had as much passion for the subject as she does. My obstacle: the picky palates of my husband and myself. When I page through the recipe books I own, I find myself eliminating almost everything because I don’t like mushrooms or he doesn’t like ground turkey or I don’t like sun-dried tomatoes or we don’t eat pork.

What I need? My own cookbook of my go-to recipies, so that when I do find a winner, I have it in one place where I can go to it again and again. And now, there’s Tastebook.com, offering me exactly that. Only instead of an index card box of hideously folded and stained print-outs from epicurious.com, it will be a beautiful spiral book with tabbed sections that I name myself, ie “Julian’s Faves” or “What my dad likes that is not more than thirty-minutes worth of cooking” instead of “Appetizers”. Oh, and you can share recipes with friends. (All you mushroom hating, semi-vegetarians, share with me!)

So I’m on a mission to fill up my Tastebook.

Coolness! Heather has arranged for us to giveaway two Tastebooks! Comment on this post before midnight on Halloween, and we’ll pick a winner at random on Thursday November 1!

Prisca October 25, 2007 at 6:36 am

This is the most awesome idea and once completed would definitely become an instant heirloom for our family! I so want to make one. :)

Cathi October 25, 2007 at 6:37 am

This is cool! Thanks for offering it.

susannah October 25, 2007 at 7:27 am

I love this idea!

kendra October 25, 2007 at 9:10 am

I’m a big menu planning-aholic too – I love all these on-line services that do it for you! It just makes life so much easier. I recently saw an idea of using a binder filled with plastic sleeves and photo sleeves to organized your various recipes (cards and magazine pages and print outs). I thought that was a great idea too.

So many odd pages and places . . . but this would be wonderful to have all in one place!! I love it!

Just this morning, as I nearly broke my back to open my “cookbook drawer,” I lamented at yet another part of my life that felt disorganized. I would absolutely love one of these cookbooks!

reg October 25, 2007 at 11:19 am

my current system includes hand writting recipes out of cookbooks i get from the libray! this sure would help my crapping fingers

What a great idea, I want one!

Jennifer Ripton-Snyder October 25, 2007 at 12:20 pm

What a cool idea! I have one of those horrible, crusty, note-card holding torn-up binders doing the job now. I would love one of these…have just started my 9-month old on the homemade baby food, and I could use some inspiration right about now.

Cindy October 25, 2007 at 12:30 pm

Finally! Someone came up with just what I’d been looking for!!!

Carolyn October 25, 2007 at 12:39 pm

Brilliant! My cookbook shelf is overflowing with recipe print-outs from the internet. Help! Need Tastebook!

Melissa October 25, 2007 at 1:11 pm

What a great idea. And a time saver, too. Now only if I liked peppers like everyone else does – planning meals would be SO much easier :D

What a great idea!

aBookworm October 25, 2007 at 2:51 pm

Just right for a picky eater – I mean, me :)
Count me in. I’m sick of recipes scattered every-which-where.

Lindsay October 25, 2007 at 3:01 pm

Sara October 26, 2007 at 9:16 am

I’d love one of these! I’m also a picky eater, so this would be great in helping me organize my non-mushroom recipes!

grace October 26, 2007 at 9:59 am

what a fabulous idea! i wish i thought of it!

Stephanie October 26, 2007 at 11:19 am

So much better than the beat up spiral notebook that I tape recipes into!

Marketing Mommy October 26, 2007 at 11:23 am

I have a dirty ole binder filled with index cards, magazine pages and epicurious print-outs and this sounds so much more elegant. Here’s to hoping I’m a winner!

VDog October 26, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Damn!! Have some comments!

You guys must have a SHITLOAD of lurkers! Niiiihhiiiiiiccceee!!!

Pick me, pick me! You can save on shipping! heh.

Have a fab w/e!

Tami October 26, 2007 at 9:38 pm

I got real ambitious about a month ago and started typing all my printed-out/torn-out-of-magazine recipes with the intent of putting them in this really cute binder I saw. Well, I never bought the binder, I’ve still got over half-a-pile of recipes to go, and I’m running extremely low on ambition.
This book would be a lifesaver!

Sarah October 26, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Any chance you can give away 90? This is exactly what we’ve been talking about doing. If only we had a spare second. This is such a great idea. Thanks for sharing.

Monica October 27, 2007 at 7:22 am

This would be perfect for me! What a great product!

Cara October 27, 2007 at 7:52 am

Wow! this is such a great idea! I put together a family cookbook a few years back, but I don’t think anyone but me uses it… This would totally get used!

magpie October 27, 2007 at 8:17 am

That sounds cool.

Lauren October 27, 2007 at 8:21 am

I LOVE this idea!! My mom has a box of oooooold, faded 3×5 index cards that I would love to turn into a cookbook for her. Of course, I could print too and then have all of her fantastic recipes myself as well. :-)

I’ll definitely be checking Tastebook out! Thanks for sharing!

Misty October 27, 2007 at 9:14 am

This is SUCH a cool idea! Please put me in the running!

Kendra October 27, 2007 at 9:56 am

This is such a great idea! Right now I have at least three different systems for saving recipes — a little box, a big box, and a notebook. It’s impossible to find anything! This would save me a lot of kitchen clutter.

Jess October 27, 2007 at 10:36 am

Between Allrecipes, various cookbooks, and printouts and index cards of recipes that people have given me, something like this would be really helpful to organize everything! When you add in my super-picky five year-old, everything gets crazy!

taryn October 27, 2007 at 10:52 am

What a novel idea!
