Activity #497: Make your own TasteBook
You may have noticed that Heather is really into meal planning and finding solutions to getting dinner on the table before putting the baby to bed. I wish I had as much passion for the subject as she does. My obstacle: the picky palates of my husband and myself. When I page through the recipe books I own, I find myself eliminating almost everything because I don’t like mushrooms or he doesn’t like ground turkey or I don’t like sun-dried tomatoes or we don’t eat pork.
What I need? My own cookbook of my go-to recipies, so that when I do find a winner, I have it in one place where I can go to it again and again. And now, there’s Tastebook.com, offering me exactly that. Only instead of an index card box of hideously folded and stained print-outs from epicurious.com, it will be a beautiful spiral book with tabbed sections that I name myself, ie “Julian’s Faves” or “What my dad likes that is not more than thirty-minutes worth of cooking” instead of “Appetizers”. Oh, and you can share recipes with friends. (All you mushroom hating, semi-vegetarians, share with me!)
So I’m on a mission to fill up my Tastebook.
Coolness! Heather has arranged for us to giveaway two Tastebooks! Comment on this post before midnight on Halloween, and we’ll pick a winner at random on Thursday November 1!

October 24th, 2007 at 12:06 pm
I would love to do this with my Mom’s recipes!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
This is wonderful. I too have the same problem. We all have things we don’t like which can make it very difficult to cook. I would love this!!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:17 pm
great idea!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
What a great idea! This certainly beats my current system of marking approved recipes in my cookbook collection with ripped bits of scrap paper and penciling in notes along the margins. I’d love to have my own book of nothing but the winners. It’d save me a lot of shelf space and hassle.
October 24th, 2007 at 12:24 pm
I so need one of these! I NEVER look in cookbooks because 90% of the time I don’t have one of the ingredients or someone doesn’t like it!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
This is so cool! I love cooking!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
Oh, how I LOVE this idea! I could really benefit from one of these because every time I need one of my go-to recipes I have to search the house up and down! I would like to give the people at Tastebook a big, fat high five! Thanks for the great find….And an awesome chance to win one! Keeping my fingers crossed tight…..
October 24th, 2007 at 12:50 pm
I’d LOVE to try this out!! Please randomly select me.
October 24th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
Wow what a great idea. I have about 100 print outs laying in my cookbook.
October 24th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
What an amazing idea! I would love to do this with my recipes. I make most everything from scratch, but storing all my recipes in my head has lead to disaster several times :). Thanks for the great giveaway!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
What an awesome idea! I’ve been meaning to put my favorite recipes all in one place before the babies started coming and now I’m post baby #2 and they are still in a random pile.
LOL!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
OOOOH, my kitchen will love you for letting me win this contest.
Right now all my “OOOH-This sounds good-so I’ll print it off the internet-Recipes” are on the kitchen counter or posted on the walls. I’d love to have an attractive place to store them!
October 24th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
This would make a great baby shower present! I’m going to search through this, a bunch.
October 24th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
How fortuitous. I’m creating a family cookbook, and I was going to use Blurb or Lulu. This looks interesting. Count me in for the contest, thanks!
October 24th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
This is brilliant! Maybe then I could finally clear out my stash of cookbooks… okay, probably not. But I still love the concept.
October 24th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
What a great idea! We currently keep a list of meals that everyone likes in gmail document, and then once we pick one, we have to go search for the recipe. Not exactly efficient. I would love this!
October 24th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Sounds much more efficient than the system I’m using now!
October 24th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Very cool! My wife and I would love to combine our family recipes, and this would be perfect!
October 24th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
how timely! I have been working on my own jerry-rigged and not as pretty version of this. But that, that is too beautiful!
October 24th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Ok, I totally need this! I have so many cookbooks with just one or two pages marked! It would be great to get all my recipes together in my own “cookbook”!
October 24th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
What a great concept!
October 24th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
what a wonderful idea!
October 24th, 2007 at 3:18 pm
I want, I want. That is perfect and cute to boot!
October 24th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
this would be so much better than the printouts scattered about my kitchen.
October 24th, 2007 at 3:37 pm
I love cookbooks, but this one would be the best. All the recipes I actually use, instead of a book full of pretty pictures of food I never make.
October 24th, 2007 at 3:37 pm
I would love to put my grandmother’s recipes into this! Great Christmas present for my Mom! Creative give-away, thank you!
October 24th, 2007 at 4:11 pm
Interesting idea. I’ve done something similar with a binder, but it’s too easy to put things in it that I think I might want to try but never do. After a few months the binder if full of stuff that I’m not making so it’s useless. I think going to the trouble of making one of these books would really force you to pare the recipes down to what you actually make on a regular basis.
October 24th, 2007 at 4:27 pm
AHHHhh! I so need this!
October 24th, 2007 at 5:02 pm
ME! It sounds like something I would use, anything to mak emy life easier.
October 24th, 2007 at 5:10 pm
Right now I have two binders– one w “winner” recipes– and one with recipes to try (which is bulging at the seams; who knows if I’ll ever get to those). The winner one is a bit of a mess, though. Something a bit prettified like this would be a big help.
I also made an heirloom recipe book in a scrapbooking class earlier in the year. I love it and am quite proud of it– but it’s too fragile for the kitchen! Impractical, yes. But I think of it more as a scrapbook of cooking than a recipe book.
October 24th, 2007 at 5:16 pm
This would help get me organized.
October 24th, 2007 at 5:23 pm
I would love a Tastebook!
October 24th, 2007 at 5:32 pm
Wow! That is perfect for what I need for my recipes!
October 24th, 2007 at 5:33 pm
What a great idea… count me in.
October 24th, 2007 at 5:46 pm
I LOVE this idea, so cool! Thanks again for the giveaway…I need all the help I can get in the kitchen!
October 24th, 2007 at 5:48 pm
What a great idea. I have started one of my own- handwritten. Not so nice, and I actually have to copy things down with the inevitable mistakes.
October 24th, 2007 at 5:49 pm
I would love this! My recipes are an AWFUL MESS! What a great idea.
October 24th, 2007 at 6:14 pm
This is such a great idea. I’ve got my own basic version in a Word document, but this is so much cooler!
October 24th, 2007 at 6:30 pm
Please enter me in the drawing too. Thanks.
October 24th, 2007 at 6:40 pm
I love this idea…. have been playing with the site all day
October 24th, 2007 at 6:59 pm
I too am a mushroom hating semi-vegetarian! But the true question is how do you feel about eggplant?
October 24th, 2007 at 7:00 pm
what an awesome idea - i’d love one. i’ve started gathering ideas to make my own, but this makes it so easy!
October 24th, 2007 at 7:09 pm
My wife would love to have one of these to replace our hodgepodge of recipe storage. Looks like a cool idea.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:46 pm
What a neat idea! I’m still stuck in the recipe box rut…although I frequently take out those we turn our noses up at.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:21 pm
This would be such a fun Christmas present!
October 24th, 2007 at 9:39 pm
what a great idea! I have so many recipes, and I never have anywhere to put them!
October 24th, 2007 at 9:39 pm
Wow- there are other mushroom-hating, semi-vegetarians out there?
We’re HUGE fans of anything by vegan chef Robin Robertson. Her crowning glory is “The Meat and Potatoes Vegetarian Cookbook” (no meat, but some potatoes…). It’s got delicious recipes that don’t require mushrooms (and it offers vegetarian options though the recipes all seem to start vegan).
I never thought my favorite cookbook would be vegetarian, much less semi-vegan…
October 24th, 2007 at 10:00 pm
I was seriously just coming up with an idea to do this on my own. This would be much prettier. Love it!
October 24th, 2007 at 11:23 pm
this would be fantastic, and a great heirloom to pass down through the family!
October 25th, 2007 at 5:15 am
What a great idea! I have a small 3-ring binder that my (younger) sister gave to me when I moved away for my Masters Degree. She wrote down all kinds of recipes for me (like how to make rice and how to make my grandmother’s etouffe).
October 25th, 2007 at 5:22 am
I love to cook! This cookbook would be a great help! Sign me up!
October 25th, 2007 at 5:44 am
This sounds great! I would love to have this to organize all my cards, printouts, etc. that are lying around!
October 25th, 2007 at 6:36 am
This is the most awesome idea and once completed would definitely become an instant heirloom for our family! I so want to make one.
October 25th, 2007 at 6:37 am
This is cool! Thanks for offering it.
October 25th, 2007 at 7:27 am
what a great idea–i use an old notebook that is falling apart!
October 25th, 2007 at 7:32 am
I love this idea!
October 25th, 2007 at 9:10 am
I’m a big menu planning-aholic too - I love all these on-line services that do it for you! It just makes life so much easier. I recently saw an idea of using a binder filled with plastic sleeves and photo sleeves to organized your various recipes (cards and magazine pages and print outs). I thought that was a great idea too.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:12 am
So many odd pages and places . . . but this would be wonderful to have all in one place!! I love it!
October 25th, 2007 at 9:46 am
count me in!
October 25th, 2007 at 10:36 am
I would love to win this!
Count me in! I blogged ya too:

October 25th, 2007 at 10:56 am
Just this morning, as I nearly broke my back to open my “cookbook drawer,” I lamented at yet another part of my life that felt disorganized. I would absolutely love one of these cookbooks!
October 25th, 2007 at 11:19 am
my current system includes hand writting recipes out of cookbooks i get from the libray! this sure would help my crapping fingers
October 25th, 2007 at 11:27 am
pick me! pick me! (please)
October 25th, 2007 at 11:27 am
Very cool, enter me!
October 25th, 2007 at 11:27 am
This looks fun!
October 25th, 2007 at 11:46 am
What a great idea, I want one!
October 25th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
What a cool idea! I have one of those horrible, crusty, note-card holding torn-up binders doing the job now. I would love one of these…have just started my 9-month old on the homemade baby food, and I could use some inspiration right about now.
October 25th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
Finally! Someone came up with just what I’d been looking for!!!
October 25th, 2007 at 12:39 pm
Brilliant! My cookbook shelf is overflowing with recipe print-outs from the internet. Help! Need Tastebook!
October 25th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
I’d love to put all my favorite grandmother and mother recipes in this book! Please enter me!

What a great idea. And a time saver, too. Now only if I liked peppers like everyone else does - planning meals would be SO much easier
October 25th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
What a great idea!
October 25th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
Just right for a picky eater - I mean, me
Count me in. I’m sick of recipes scattered every-which-where.
October 25th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
That would be so un-intimidating! Neato!
October 25th, 2007 at 3:08 pm
Love this idea!
October 25th, 2007 at 3:57 pm
I would love to have this. What a timesaver!!
October 25th, 2007 at 4:39 pm
such a good idea
October 25th, 2007 at 5:33 pm
What a fabulous idea!
October 25th, 2007 at 6:33 pm
This would be perfect for assembling all my toddler-friendly recipes together to give to a pregnant friend.
October 25th, 2007 at 6:37 pm
Sounds great! Please count me in!
October 25th, 2007 at 7:23 pm
What a great system. Sooo handy!
October 25th, 2007 at 8:14 pm
This sounds like an incredible idea. Thanks for publishing it!
October 25th, 2007 at 8:32 pm
One place for the recipes I want and organized how I need - count me in.
October 25th, 2007 at 10:59 pm
Enter me Please! I would love to win this!
October 26th, 2007 at 8:44 am
This is the best idea! That’s exactly how I am about cookbooks/recipes so this would be perfect for me! :o)
October 26th, 2007 at 9:16 am
I’d love one of these! I’m also a picky eater, so this would be great in helping me organize my non-mushroom recipes!
October 26th, 2007 at 9:59 am
what a fabulous idea! i wish i thought of it!
October 26th, 2007 at 11:19 am
So much better than the beat up spiral notebook that I tape recipes into!
October 26th, 2007 at 11:23 am
I have a dirty ole binder filled with index cards, magazine pages and epicurious print-outs and this sounds so much more elegant. Here’s to hoping I’m a winner!
October 26th, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Damn!! Have some comments!
You guys must have a SHITLOAD of lurkers! Niiiihhiiiiiiccceee!!!
Pick me, pick me! You can save on shipping! heh.
Have a fab w/e!
October 26th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
I got real ambitious about a month ago and started typing all my printed-out/torn-out-of-magazine recipes with the intent of putting them in this really cute binder I saw. Well, I never bought the binder, I’ve still got over half-a-pile of recipes to go, and I’m running extremely low on ambition.
This book would be a lifesaver!
October 26th, 2007 at 9:57 pm
Any chance you can give away 90? This is exactly what we’ve been talking about doing. If only we had a spare second. This is such a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
October 27th, 2007 at 7:22 am
This would be perfect for me! What a great product!
October 27th, 2007 at 7:52 am
Wow! this is such a great idea! I put together a family cookbook a few years back, but I don’t think anyone but me uses it… This would totally get used!
October 27th, 2007 at 8:17 am
That sounds cool.
October 27th, 2007 at 8:21 am
I LOVE this idea!! My mom has a box of oooooold, faded 3×5 index cards that I would love to turn into a cookbook for her. Of course, I could print too and then have all of her fantastic recipes myself as well.
I’ll definitely be checking Tastebook out! Thanks for sharing!
October 27th, 2007 at 9:14 am
This is SUCH a cool idea! Please put me in the running!
October 27th, 2007 at 9:56 am
This is such a great idea! Right now I have at least three different systems for saving recipes — a little box, a big box, and a notebook. It’s impossible to find anything! This would save me a lot of kitchen clutter.
October 27th, 2007 at 10:36 am
Between Allrecipes, various cookbooks, and printouts and index cards of recipes that people have given me, something like this would be really helpful to organize everything! When you add in my super-picky five year-old, everything gets crazy!
October 27th, 2007 at 10:52 am
What a novel idea!
October 27th, 2007 at 11:12 am
I always thought this would be a good idea. My recipes are a mess
October 27th, 2007 at 11:31 am
I do this with a three-ring binder and page “sleeves” but OH to have it look so nice! Count me in!
October 27th, 2007 at 11:44 am
This is a MARVELOUS idea! I tend not to buy cookbooks because I have a husband and kids with food allergies, and it’s really frustrating to have to tiptoe around certain ingredients (and sometimes, whole categories). Do you know how many cookbooks that aim to feed picky kids rely on peanut butter? Too many, if you’ve got allergic kids like me. I think this is a great idea (and I’m going to remember it for gifts, too)!!
October 27th, 2007 at 11:55 am
What a great idea! Thanks!
October 27th, 2007 at 12:03 pm
What a great idea!

What an awesome, much-needed idea! And great giveaway! Oh, how I could use this.
October 27th, 2007 at 12:56 pm
Great idea — so much better than the random page tabs in shelves and shelves of cookbooks and magazines.
October 27th, 2007 at 1:01 pm
That would be so much better than my binder-clipped printouts!
October 27th, 2007 at 1:06 pm
this is a fabulous idea!
October 27th, 2007 at 1:06 pm
Oh, please enter me too! My recipes are scattered all over hte place!!!
October 27th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Wow, what a great idea. I have all my recipes in binders but they are pretty mseey and getting ripped up. What a great way to save recipes that are family favorites to hand down to future generations!
October 27th, 2007 at 2:36 pm
WOw — what a neat thing! I’d love to win my own tastebook.
October 27th, 2007 at 3:43 pm
This is just what I keep saying I’d make some day….not that I’d ever have time to do it myself!
October 27th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
I’ve done something similar, but not nearly so nice - actually started photocopying favorite recipes from cookbooks that we already own and putting them in a binder so we don’t have to go searching through many cookbooks to find a certain recipe. Definately a work in progress though.
October 27th, 2007 at 9:39 pm
That is a brilliant idea!!! And I love cookbooks
October 27th, 2007 at 10:41 pm
That’s pretty cool. I checked out their site and I AM their target audience. I have so many cookbooks, looseleaf printouts, 3X5 cards, PDFs, and links. It’s amazing I can find anything. And what a great idea for the holidays. Or family reunions. Or Mother’s Day.
October 28th, 2007 at 5:04 am
I love this! I always have such a hard time planning our meals for the week!
October 28th, 2007 at 5:47 am
This is a wonderful idea. Currently my recipe book looks like a really bad collage of recipes written, cut of of magazines, and dripped on by various food items. I would love a book that makes me look organized!
October 28th, 2007 at 6:24 am
Wow! Beautiful, practical, convenient and with sooo many posibilities! I tried doing this with my nieces, gave them a binder with my favorite family recipes one Christmas, meant to update it every Xmas, but didn’t. This would be a great way to keep up with sharing recipes with them, and friends and family living far away.
October 28th, 2007 at 6:43 am
I’ve been collecting family recipes for years and this would be a great way to display and oranize them!
October 28th, 2007 at 7:03 am
Fabulous! Count me in!
October 28th, 2007 at 9:15 am
This is fantastic! I could make my own, one of family recipes, one of recipes for kids to make, one of my friend’s best recipes….the list goes on and on!
October 28th, 2007 at 9:24 am
love the idea!
October 28th, 2007 at 9:25 am
Sounds like a great idea, I would love to try it out.
October 28th, 2007 at 9:38 am
This would be best solution to all these years of collecting! I can start one for my daughter now and add “editions” later.
October 28th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
That is SO cool! Thank you for posting about it! :o)
October 28th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
I’ve been wanting to gather a bunch of our family recipes for a cookbook for everyone…the only bummer about this, is that it looks like Tastebook isn’t set up yet to allow you to include your own personal photos. Hoping they will do that soon!!!
October 28th, 2007 at 3:57 pm
I’ve gathered and graded recipes A+, A and A- that are what we call “keepers” and put them in a folder. This idea is just so wonderful. Wish I would have thought about it!
October 28th, 2007 at 4:41 pm
I would love to have one of these. The cookbook I have written my recipes in is literally falling apart.
October 28th, 2007 at 5:10 pm
I would love to have one of these. I can never decide what to make any more since we had the baby. Thanks!
October 28th, 2007 at 11:32 pm
I have been really working on organizing and compling great recipes. This would make my job go so much easier. I would LOVE to have this in my kitchen.
October 29th, 2007 at 9:05 am
What a great idea! Thanks for the contest!
October 29th, 2007 at 9:59 am
I love the fact that it’s not “permanently” bound - can continually swap recipes in and out.
October 29th, 2007 at 10:52 am
Sounds fantastic!
October 29th, 2007 at 9:21 pm
I LOVE this idea. But, I LOVE, LOVE your blog more. Kudos!
October 30th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
Yep! Does look a lot prettier than the ancient binder and more bang for the buck than sheet protectors. Sounds great!
October 30th, 2007 at 2:27 pm
This is exactly what I need!! I have a very large stack of recipes I have printed out or copied from others or whatever, but it’s so disorganized and messy. Anytime I want to find a certain recipe, I have to dig through the entire pile (which takes a good 10 minutes). I’ve been meaning to organize the “pile”, but just haven’t found the motivation. This Taste Book would give me that motivation. Yay! And I can put in the recipes we actually USE with the notes I have made on HOW we use them. Double yay!
October 30th, 2007 at 6:08 pm
This is a great item! I am yet another one of those people with a notebook with cryptic scribbled recipes and taped-in recipes clipped from magazines. I could definitely use this.
October 30th, 2007 at 9:26 pm
I would love it!!
October 31st, 2007 at 5:52 am
This is such a great idea…I’m always making a good meal and then forgetting about it when it comes time to make the grocery list!!
October 31st, 2007 at 1:22 pm
VERY COOL! I’d love to be entered…
October 31st, 2007 at 1:45 pm
finally! this is the perfect solution!
