Activity #497: Make your own TasteBook

You may have noticed that Heather is really into meal planning and finding solutions to getting dinner on the table before putting the baby to bed. I wish I had as much passion for the subject as she does. My obstacle: the picky palates of my husband and myself. When I page through the recipe books I own, I find myself eliminating almost everything because I don’t like mushrooms or he doesn’t like ground turkey or I don’t like sun-dried tomatoes or we don’t eat pork.

What I need? My own cookbook of my go-to recipies, so that when I do find a winner, I have it in one place where I can go to it again and again. And now, there’s Tastebook.com, offering me exactly that. Only instead of an index card box of hideously folded and stained print-outs from epicurious.com, it will be a beautiful spiral book with tabbed sections that I name myself, ie “Julian’s Faves” or “What my dad likes that is not more than thirty-minutes worth of cooking” instead of “Appetizers”. Oh, and you can share recipes with friends. (All you mushroom hating, semi-vegetarians, share with me!)

So I’m on a mission to fill up my Tastebook.

Coolness! Heather has arranged for us to giveaway two Tastebooks! Comment on this post before midnight on Halloween, and we’ll pick a winner at random on Thursday November 1!

I would love to do this with my Mom’s recipes!

  2. Aimee Says:

This is wonderful. I too have the same problem. We all have things we don’t like which can make it very difficult to cook. I would love this!!

    great idea!

  4. Rachel Melcher Says:

What a great idea! This certainly beats my current system of marking approved recipes in my cookbook collection with ripped bits of scrap paper and penciling in notes along the margins. I’d love to have my own book of nothing but the winners. It’d save me a lot of shelf space and hassle.

  5. Alexia Says:
    October 24th, 2007 at 12:24 pm

I so need one of these! I NEVER look in cookbooks because 90% of the time I don’t have one of the ingredients or someone doesn’t like it!

  6. Sarah Says:

This is so cool! I love cooking!

  7. Sara Says:
    October 24th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Oh, how I LOVE this idea! I could really benefit from one of these because every time I need one of my go-to recipes I have to search the house up and down! I would like to give the people at Tastebook a big, fat high five! Thanks for the great find….And an awesome chance to win one! Keeping my fingers crossed tight…..

  8. Brooke Says:

I’d LOVE to try this out!! Please randomly select me.

What an amazing idea! I would love to do this with my recipes. I make most everything from scratch, but storing all my recipes in my head has lead to disaster several times :). Thanks for the great giveaway!

What an awesome idea! I’ve been meaning to put my favorite recipes all in one place before the babies started coming and now I’m post baby #2 and they are still in a random pile. :) LOL!

OOOOH, my kitchen will love you for letting me win this contest. :) Right now all my “OOOH-This sounds good-so I’ll print it off the internet-Recipes” are on the kitchen counter or posted on the walls. I’d love to have an attractive place to store them!

  13. Ticia Says:

This would make a great baby shower present! I’m going to search through this, a bunch.

  14. Jill Says:

How fortuitous. I’m creating a family cookbook, and I was going to use Blurb or Lulu. This looks interesting. Count me in for the contest, thanks!

  15. JeCaThRe Says:

  16. Caley Says:
    October 24th, 2007 at 2:00 pm

What a great idea! We currently keep a list of meals that everyone likes in gmail document, and then once we pick one, we have to go search for the recipe. Not exactly efficient. I would love this!

  17. Celeste Says:
    October 24th, 2007 at 2:02 pm

Sounds much more efficient than the system I’m using now! :)

  18. Rick Says:

  25. Sarah Says:

I love cookbooks, but this one would be the best. All the recipes I actually use, instead of a book full of pretty pictures of food I never make.

  26. Kristen Says:
    October 24th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

I would love to put my grandmother’s recipes into this! Great Christmas present for my Mom! Creative give-away, thank you!

  27. Wendy Says:
    October 24th, 2007 at 4:11 pm

Interesting idea. I’ve done something similar with a binder, but it’s too easy to put things in it that I think I might want to try but never do. After a few months the binder if full of stuff that I’m not making so it’s useless. I think going to the trouble of making one of these books would really force you to pare the recipes down to what you actually make on a regular basis.

  28. Julie Mead Says:
    October 24th, 2007 at 4:27 pm

    AHHHhh! I so need this!

  29. Candice Says:
    October 24th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

ME! It sounds like something I would use, anything to mak emy life easier.

  30. molly Says:
    October 24th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

Right now I have two binders– one w “winner” recipes– and one with recipes to try (which is bulging at the seams; who knows if I’ll ever get to those). The winner one is a bit of a mess, though. Something a bit prettified like this would be a big help.

I also made an heirloom recipe book in a scrapbooking class earlier in the year. I love it and am quite proud of it– but it’s too fragile for the kitchen! Impractical, yes. But I think of it more as a scrapbook of cooking than a recipe book.

  31. Divrchk Says:

This would help get me organized.

  47. adrienne Says:
    October 24th, 2007 at 9:39 pm

Wow- there are other mushroom-hating, semi-vegetarians out there?

We’re HUGE fans of anything by vegan chef Robin Robertson. Her crowning glory is “The Meat and Potatoes Vegetarian Cookbook” (no meat, but some potatoes…). It’s got delicious recipes that don’t require mushrooms (and it offers vegetarian options though the recipes all seem to start vegan).

I never thought my favorite cookbook would be vegetarian, much less semi-vegan…

  48. Tonya Says:
    October 24th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

I’m a big menu planning-aholic too - I love all these on-line services that do it for you! It just makes life so much easier. I recently saw an idea of using a binder filled with plastic sleeves and photo sleeves to organized your various recipes (cards and magazine pages and print outs). I thought that was a great idea too.

I got real ambitious about a month ago and started typing all my printed-out/torn-out-of-magazine recipes with the intent of putting them in this really cute binder I saw. Well, I never bought the binder, I’ve still got over half-a-pile of recipes to go, and I’m running extremely low on ambition.

This is a MARVELOUS idea! I tend not to buy cookbooks because I have a husband and kids with food allergies, and it’s really frustrating to have to tiptoe around certain ingredients (and sometimes, whole categories). Do you know how many cookbooks that aim to feed picky kids rely on peanut butter? Too many, if you’ve got allergic kids like me. I think this is a great idea (and I’m going to remember it for gifts, too)!!

Wow, what a great idea. I have all my recipes in binders but they are pretty mseey and getting ripped up. What a great way to save recipes that are family favorites to hand down to future generations!

WOw — what a neat thing! I’d love to win my own tastebook.

This is just what I keep saying I’d make some day….not that I’d ever have time to do it myself!

I’ve done something similar, but not nearly so nice - actually started photocopying favorite recipes from cookbooks that we already own and putting them in a binder so we don’t have to go searching through many cookbooks to find a certain recipe. Definately a work in progress though.

That is a brilliant idea!!! And I love cookbooks

That’s pretty cool. I checked out their site and I AM their target audience. I have so many cookbooks, looseleaf printouts, 3X5 cards, PDFs, and links. It’s amazing I can find anything. And what a great idea for the holidays. Or family reunions. Or Mother’s Day.

This is a wonderful idea. Currently my recipe book looks like a really bad collage of recipes written, cut of of magazines, and dripped on by various food items. I would love a book that makes me look organized!

Wow! Beautiful, practical, convenient and with sooo many posibilities! I tried doing this with my nieces, gave them a binder with my favorite family recipes one Christmas, meant to update it every Xmas, but didn’t. This would be a great way to keep up with sharing recipes with them, and friends and family living far away.

I’ve been collecting family recipes for years and this would be a great way to display and oranize them!

This is fantastic! I could make my own, one of family recipes, one of recipes for kids to make, one of my friend’s best recipes….the list goes on and on!

This would be best solution to all these years of collecting! I can start one for my daughter now and add “editions” later.

I’ve been wanting to gather a bunch of our family recipes for a cookbook for everyone…the only bummer about this, is that it looks like Tastebook isn’t set up yet to allow you to include your own personal photos. Hoping they will do that soon!!!

  129. Stephanie Says:
    October 28th, 2007 at 3:57 pm

I’ve gathered and graded recipes A+, A and A- that are what we call “keepers” and put them in a folder. This idea is just so wonderful. Wish I would have thought about it!

Yep! Does look a lot prettier than the ancient binder and more bang for the buck than sheet protectors. Sounds great!

This is exactly what I need!! I have a very large stack of recipes I have printed out or copied from others or whatever, but it’s so disorganized and messy. Anytime I want to find a certain recipe, I have to dig through the entire pile (which takes a good 10 minutes). I’ve been meaning to organize the “pile”, but just haven’t found the motivation. This Taste Book would give me that motivation. Yay! And I can put in the recipes we actually USE with the notes I have made on HOW we use them. Double yay!

This is a great item! I am yet another one of those people with a notebook with cryptic scribbled recipes and taped-in recipes clipped from magazines. I could definitely use this.
