Our 8 year old has been working himself out of jobs- showing his 3 year old brother how to do certain chores like emptying the dishwasher and feeding the dogs. While my 8 year old had to do the dishwasher every day by himself, he now only has to do it every other day because his brother does it (with my help) on the other days. And some days they actually do it together! But yes, having kids participate in the chores of the household is a must.

@Cara, I think the ties are cute but haven't done 'em myself. Can I admit to you that we have no Playmobil because my family has fully standardized on Lego and I'm a huge geek engineer? You make me feel I'm missing out though!

Great interview!
And, yes, my husband is getting adhesive mustaches in his stocking this year since there was a 99 cent online deal the other day;)
And I currently have 2 mystery Lego figurines hiding in my sock drawer that are going in my daughter's stocking;) She also loves the Playmobil mystery figurines -- her favorite is the Statue of Liberty, since she is obsessed with the Statue of Liberty for some reason. As soon as she saw the pile of pieces she said "It's the Statue of Liberty! Now I can play New York with all my Playmobil people!" Awesome.

Humm, my 8 yr old really need to be kicked into gear. Slacker. I know its my fault. We have a big "fairness" issue in my house with each kid complaining if they have to do something their sibling doesn't or doesn't get something their sibling does. They are 8 and 5, I can't treat them exactly alike. I try to not pay attention to the complaints of "its not fair" but its really annoying and in the end just makes me mad. Anyone else have a HUGE "fairness" problem? Any suggestions?

Also, what are good "starter" chores for a 5 yr old and 8 yr old. They are not very good at any chores which just makes it more work for me if I have to supervise closely or redo everything. Plus, a lot of chores are centered around mealtime and before dinner and before breakfast my kids are tired and hungry. Not a good combination for getting them to do anything without driving me crazy.
