I wear a 21 lb 14 month comfortably every day, sometimes for many hours and carrying other heavy things--like groceries, books, or a laptop. I am not superwoman. The answer is a well-designed baby carrier. The Bjorn does not have an ergonomic design--the baby will be dangling by its crotch, pulling its center of gravity and yours further apart as the baby gains weight. I use a mei tai (I like Kozy carriers best) or a woven wrap (like a Didymos or BBSlen). There are also buckle carriers like bEcos and Yamos if you don't like tying things. Check out www.thebabywearer.com--your back will get the break it deserves.

I've found that slings are much easier on your back to carry bigger babies than front carriers are. I stopped with the Bjorn when my baby was around 9 mos. I can still carry her in a sling for longish periods (at church, or out somewhere, she doesn't fall asleep well in the stroller) and she is almost 2.
