Activity #126: Give your back a break

by Whitney on September 13, 2007

in Mommy, Month 6

doug loves the bjornFriends without babies love to wear the front carrier. Let them — 6-month olds are heavy! Ask a friend or sibling if they want to “wear the baby” while you are out and about.

Look how how happy my friend Doug was in this picture to be wearing my son around. Deliriously.

A few weeks ago, Heather gave me 30 minutes to myself by wearing my tiny Scarlett on a long walk while she pushed her own baby in his stroller. I still owe her for that one.

I enjoyed wearing Julian until my pregnant belly gave him too much lumbar support to be healthy (for either of us!)

We’ll see if I’m still as happy when I carrying my own kid around in a few weeks (or however long after birth it is that you can use one of those things)

Yeah, My son is 5mos and 18.4lbs, not so much fun to carry them around like that anymore, but friends don’t know that and they think it’s cool, so I say -have at it!! ;-)

I’ve found that slings are much easier on your back to carry bigger babies than front carriers are. I stopped with the Bjorn when my baby was around 9 mos. I can still carry her in a sling for longish periods (at church, or out somewhere, she doesn’t fall asleep well in the stroller) and she is almost 2.

I wear a 21 lb 14 month comfortably every day, sometimes for many hours and carrying other heavy things–like groceries, books, or a laptop. I am not superwoman. The answer is a well-designed baby carrier. The Bjorn does not have an ergonomic design–the baby will be dangling by its crotch, pulling its center of gravity and yours further apart as the baby gains weight. I use a mei tai (I like Kozy carriers best) or a woven wrap (like a Didymos or BBSlen). There are also buckle carriers like bEcos and Yamos if you don’t like tying things. Check out http://www.thebabywearer.com–your back will get the break it deserves.
