First off, this is not the place to find out about counting pounds or calories… so, I can recommend the following tasty ways to get your calcium:
- mint chocolate chip ice cream in front of the TV
- cheese – fancy with red wine or the stick variety in the middle of the night
- a tall glass of milk with cookies or cake
- hot chocolate made with real milk
- decaf (single shot, double tall) latte
- real whipped cream on anything
- vanilla flavored steamed milk
- this enormous cream puff — heavy cream means heavy calcium, right?

love it. especially the middle of the night. i was always hungry in the middle of the night when i was round the clock nursing.
Thought you might like to try getting your calcium from Adora-Calcium the Gourmet Way. Great tasting milk or dark chocolate—but 500mg Calcium, 100IU of Vitamin D (and you need your D to absorb the calcium) and vitamin K. All natural. Not quite a decadent as your proposal but perhaps a really good (and lower calorie) middle ground. http://www.adoracalcium.com for free sample.
Those are good ways to get calcium, I would say! If we could only eat those things and not gain a pound that would be great!
I Added a link to your blog on my blog page because I love your site. If you would like for me to take it off, please let me know.
These are good ways to get calcium. However, as a pediatrician I am concerned about your suggestion of eating cheese with red wine. Remember, when you are nursing, your baby eats what you eat. Ethanol (the alcohol molecule in red wine) is one of the smallest molecules in existence and can easily pass into your breastmilk. If you don’t want to get baby drunk, I’d watch that if I were you.
Your list tells me you are aware of the risks of taking in certain compounds why you’re pregnant; why else would you drink a decaf latte? Please consider what you’re exposing your child to in your breastmilk.
On the other hand, good for your for nursing. As a pediatrician I can’t tell you how less frequently I see breastfed babies in comparison with bottlefed babies.
Dr. D.
Thanks Dr. D. I didn’t realize that about red wine. I tend to drink wine in such small amounts that I didn’ t think much of it… it should read “eat fancy cheese with a half glass of red wine or the stick variety in the middle of the night (which I did a ton!)”.
Is beer cheese fondue ok for nursing moms? I can get behind that too.
#1 (mint chocolate chip ice cream) is even better if you can share it – last night I had some with a pregnant friend. Calcium for all!
any recommendations for someone with a milk allergy?
What are your favorite ways to get calcium now? Can you make those more fun? Broccoli and spinach? Do tofuti cuties have any calcium? What about a popsicle followed by a Calcium pill?
