I was never much of a beer girl in my twenties. Blech, I thought. And then I got pregnant (with boys if that matters) and sipped a little iron-rich Guinness on St. Patrick’s Day and changed my mind to YUMMMM!
Guinness is still my beer of choice. In fact, my mom was kind enough to smuggle a couple bottles into the hospital for me and Alec after I delivered Milo last year.
If you’re nursing, beer will help with milk production… if not, it might still help deal with the crying (yours and baby’s).
And my husband thinks its worth mentioning that we’re talking about one a day, not a whole case…cheers!

No joke, my FIL is Irish and he said that in Ireland they use Guiness as a milk producer…they call it mothers milk. I also heard it from one of our NICU nurses. I’ll have to try the lactation tonic…mmm sounds good.
In my 20’s I preferred cheap beer (bad beer). But since being pregnant with my son I can only drink strong/dark beers like Guinness and stouts. Maybe it has something to do with having little boys?!
Guinness helped me through the three day work week I had that drastically slowed my milk production when I returned to work. 12-14 hour days with no newborn meant the first day at home was rough.
Guinness was suggested, then a friend in Dublin recommended a shot of Chambord in it (I wasn’t fond of stouts back then). Yum.
Perhaps that is why my 8 year old always wants to try the beers we enjoy!
WOW! I didn’t know that beer helped milk production. Would have LOVED to have known that when I was struggling during those first few weeks of nursing.
I got here from the Blogher Ads links and am glad to have learnt something new!
My OB is irish and when he found out my husband is a homebrewer, he strongly suggested I have myself a nice bottle of homebrew in the recovery room after delivery. He said the hops and the unpasturized yeast help your milk come in. Less than 2 more months, and I’m *so* looking forward to a nice cold one!
Is anyone else worried about the effects on the baby? With all the lit. out there about drinking (granted it might be 1 or 2) and alcohol for infants…it just seems like a scary risk; especially, when the milk does come in with the baby’s demand (or at least in my experience).
Guiness is AMAZING for milk production.
I understand Becky’s concern. And I don’t recommend nursing a beer just before you feed. But, it does work to make the milk happen.
