It's true. Today he started "storing" all of his little bunny crackers in the knotty holes of the wood table for later. I looked more closely and it is soooo scratched up. One thing we are doing is mostly confining his explorations to the kitchen/living room area of the house with a gate because babyproofing/protecting the whole house is not practical. But we'll see how long before he figures out how to beat the gate! :)

Babies with their spit-up and milk spills.
Toddlers with their snotty noses, peanut butter hands, crackers hidden in crevices.
Preschoolers discovering Sharpies and leaving crayons around. Jumping on and off furniture.
Gradeschoolers eating dinner in front of the TV, barely spilling - ha!
Makes me want to write a haiku.

As soon as I saw the title, I thought, Duh. Of course. No, you cannot have nice things. My toddler just scribbled all over the large storage ottoman with a ballpoint pen. My husband and I were laughing about how we used to have a dining room rug. My kids have jumped on the couch so much that it is completely destroyed under the cushions. I'll buy a new one in six years or so. I would love some table lamps to improve the lighting in our house, but I'm sure the toddler (a.k.a. "Mr. Entropy") would have his way with it within a week. Someday.

I don't know, some people seem to manage it... but we've resigned ourselves to house-destroying chaos for the next few years.

Maybe I'm kinda feeling sorry for myself because this weekend we were going around our house and noticing how our 3 year old has trashed our house (and how we are pregnant with another one who'll continue the cycle), but I think you can't have nice things with a kid IF you want them to stay pristine. I do think that's just the reality. We've sort of decided that we will not be buying any "nice" furniture until we're done with small kids. We have also removed a lamp and a chest that are particularly precious to us--we don't even want to take the chance that they'll get broken or scratched. It's frustrating but we keep trying to focus on how this is just temporary, and once our kids are bigger we can decorate however we want.
