Last week I saw a post with 25 ideas for scrapbook pages for your baby.  It reminded me to share three ideas with you for second children. We don’t want them totally neglected in the baby book department.

Holding a framed photo. My friend Emily snapped this picture of her baby boy Desmond at 6 months [...]

Our first chapter book

by RookieMom Heather on January 7, 2010

in Blog, Having 2 kids, Momoirs of a Rookie Mom

Holden’s preschool started reading “chapter books” before naptime at the beginning of the school year. I wasn’t familiar with the term, but as a college-educated woman, I figured it out soon enough. A chapter book is a book with chapters and maybe some pages with no pictures at all.
Whoa. Harry Potter, here we come.
Our children’s [...]

If you have two kids within four years of age, it’s likely that you’ll find yourself strolling the younger one while the older one walks. May we recommend a little trick?

Attach something to the stroller for your older child to hold onto, so that she feels included and so that you know exactly where she [...]

Children in weddings have two key jobs: The first part is the job itself (ring bearer, flower girl, or junior something) entailing a well-timed walk down the aisle while carrying something (optional) followed by quiet standing or sitting.
The second job — perhaps more important — is to be cute in a picture. To do this, [...]

Your standard issue souvenir shirt, labeled as unisex, is pretty much for boys. Don’t fight me on this. The boxy cut and thick collar of a boys tee is fine for romping around, but if you are saving some favorite boy shirts for the baby girl you are expecting, you may come to find you [...]

How to: give two babies a bath

by RookieMom Heather on September 2, 2009

in Blog, Having 2 kids, How to

When I became pregnant with baby #2 (the one we now call Milo), Whitney scoured the Internets looking for baby advice for me. The best one about bathing a baby (when you have two under two or even two under three) is “Just bathe the dirtiest one.”
We used that tip for a long time. Here [...]

How do I instill money awareness into these little guys when shopping carts are overflowing at Old Navy and boxes of mini fridges are piled high in Target?
Milo and Holden are in a year-round preschool. Of course they grow from year to year so we are not entirely immune to the “season” that has become [...]

Activity #416: Host a family movie night

by RookieMom Heather on August 1, 2009

in Having 2 kids, Preschooler

I once read in Entertainment Weekly that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie like to have regular movie-watching parties with the kids on a regular basis. She said,

We always have one night a week where everybody stays up late, watches a movie, and stays in our bed. We have, like, a slumber party.
At the time, [...]

I’m confident that Heather will not disagree when I nominate myself the more fashion-forward of the Rookie Moms. I am more interested in pop culture, more drawn to what’s new, and more willing to spend money on clothes. I am also less likely to leave the house without make up and would never ever wear [...]

Baby Shower ideas for second time moms

by RookieMom Heather on May 31, 2009

in Blog, Having 2 kids, How to

When I was about to have my rookie baby, Holden, I looked at my friend Susan (going at it for the second time) as though she were a total expert. I thought that I was sooooo special (not true!) and sooooo clueless (true!) and that she had it all figured out.
Well, I have news for [...]

We made it through the Winter like champs. The boys didn’t get sick, I worked my part-time hours. Life as a working mom was as good as it gets (And by “good” I mean that I worked 25 to 30 hours outside of the home for a paying job where people say nice things once [...]
