Christine Koh lives in the Boston area with her husband and 6-year-old daughter and is expecting a second daughter in March 2011. She is a recovering academic, designer, relay runner as well as a good friend. She tweets about it all at @bostonmamas.
I asked her a few questions about her experiences and expectations as a born-again rookie mom. We define a born-again rookie as a parent whose youngest child is school-age.
Tell us what are 3 things you’re excited about trying that weren’t around when Laurel was born.
Well, the three top things I’m excited about trying were, in fact, around when Laurel was born but I didn’t take advantage of them. Hands down, the first is (successful) bottle feeding — not only to give me a little freedom but so Jon and Laurel can enjoy feeding the baby. I was woefully lazy about introducing the bottle to Laurel — we didn’t get around to it until she was 3 months old and by that time she was like, “Um, no, Mom, that’s so not happening.” I’m still not wild about pumping but hopefully this time around my liquid gold will actually get used, not just tossed down the sink after refused attempts! It’s so funny…Laurel has been saying, “Mom, don’t be lazy about the bottle this time around because I want to feed my baby sister!”
The second thing I’m excited to try is mom/baby yoga classes. I’ve become very dedicated to yoga in the last few years and I want to keep it up after the baby is born — it just feels so good to stretch everything out and I’m curious to see how it would go with a baby. I thought about trying classes with Laurel but never got around to it.
And the third thing I want to try is running with a jogging stroller. As Heather well knows, I started running about a year and a half ago and one of my most incredible experiences of 2010 was participating in a 200-mile relay with the Eat. Blog. Run. team. The team plans on regrouping in 2011 and I’m hoping I can get myself ready in time with the help of a jogging stroller. One of my girlfriends is throwing me a baby shower and I requested a recycled/secondhand shower (though I’m also welcoming fresh diapers since we’ll obviously need lots of those!) — I’m keeping my fingers crossed that someone has a jogging stroller they no longer want!
Do you have any new fears or concerns?
I’ve actually found myself remarkably Zen about this pregnancy and upcoming delivery. I mean, yes, of course our lives will change a lot and there are some logistical concerns (for example, I really should look into some child care help sometime soon…), but otherwise, I’m feeling super laid back and happy about it all — both in my upcoming role as a mother of two and professionally. I think it helps that my professional life fits so much better with my role as a mom than it did when I was working on my postdoctoral fellowship while pregnant with Laurel. Back then I was surrounded by men at Harvard and MIT and there was a very clear sense that the (professional) clock was ticking and that I was screwing myself by making the choice to become a mom. It was really depressing.
What will your first outing be? Do you want to join us on our RM challenge?
OK, this is going to sound totally crazy, but when I think “outing” I think trip, and when I think trip, I think about Mom 2.0 in April! Part of me feels as if it wouldn’t be such a big deal to travel with a 4-week-old, and of course everyone else tells me I’m totally crazy. I guess I just loved the conference and people so much last year that it pains my heart to think about missing the action this year. I suppose I should keep reminding myself that it would not be the same experience with giant leaky boobs and a newborn in tow!
On a more local scope, I think your Rookie Moms challenge is wonderful; I completely agree that it helps to have outings — when Laurel was a baby I felt that I needed to get out at least once a day, even if it was a walk around the neighborhood or a visit to my parent’s house. I always felt a little deflated on the days where I hadn’t gone out and I literally could not recall a single thing I had done all day!
More specifically, given that I love cafe culture and all things crafty, your Week 1 (pretend you’re in Europe) and Week 4 (visit the fabric store) challenges totally speak to me! I was very lucky when Laurel was born in that a lot of my local girlfriends were having kids at the same time and there was no shortage of play dates. And admittedly, I also never went to mom’s groups because the concept felt too hard and a little exhausting — as in, “Ugh, what if it’s clique-y? What if I don’t connect with anyone?” However, a couple of things have happened since then… first, I’ve learned that no matter how different, a mom is a mom — we won’t all agree on how to parent but we all have a common language. And second, I’ve heard wonderful things about mom’s groups at places such as Isis Parenting. (Disclosure: I knew about them back when Laurel was a baby but only shopped there… now I do some advisory work for them and truly have deep admiration for the educational and social resources they provide for parents.) There’s an Isis less than a mile from my home — just think, I could run with the baby in a jogging stroller and meet some new moms at a mom/baby yoga class!
Do you have any questions for our readers?
I’d actually love to hear from your readers about their favorite cloth diapers. Jon and I cloth diapered Laurel for about 6 months (we used cloth when at home and disposable when out and about…we’ll probably try to do something similar this time around) but we were using old fashioned diapers (a cover, liner, and rectangular tri-fold diaper) and a service (thank you in-laws!) and we probably would have gone a lot longer if we had modern cloth diapers that were better constructed and could be laundered at home. The old fashioned ones just got so messy and became impossible to line up as Laurel got squirmier. The technology has evolved so much and I’d love to hear about favorite brands and styles.

Congratulations, Christine! As a recent second-time mom (Max, age 2, and Alessandra, 5 months), here are few things I have learned: (1) get the extra childcare NOW. For me, having extra hands to deal with my older child really helped when I was on the non-stop BF’ing wagon; (2) the Second Time Moms Group at Isis rocks! I am also in Boston (I think I am in the same neighborhood as Christine? She’s in Cleveland Circle, right?) and took part in the group at Isis in Brookline. I actually found it more helpful than the first time moms group that I did; (3) check out G Diapers as a bridge between disposible diapers and cloth. We compost and/or flush our G diapers and they work really well; (4) if you don’t already have a sling/carrier that you like, get or borrow one. I could not have managed two kids without having my hands free. Isis has “sling school” where you can try out all of their slings and, if they don’t have a class available, I found their staff to be very helpful in trying on and advising on every kind of sling available.
I just started using cloth diapers for my 5mo old and I’m so surprised how easy they are!! They sure have come a long way! I use the BumGenius 4.0 one size diapers. They function much like disposables except they are cloth! Not too bulky and no leaks (yet!). I love them. http://www.cottonbabies.com has been my main resource!
What a cute mommy! Congratulations on your second baby!
Weirdly zen is the best way to be about a new addition!
As far as diapering goes, we have tried lots of different brands that we like just fine, but my favorite is definitely Fuzzibunz sized diapers. They’re cute and they fit just right. Also, Rockin Green laundry soap is a must have.
My fave brand for one-size pocket dipes is Bumgenius 4.0. I don’t actually have any, but I have the 3.0s that I converted to snaps. I would say to stay away from velcro or touch tape in one-size diapers as it tends to wear too easily. My one aplix OS cover seems to be holding on for the long haul, though [Wonderwraps]. I only approve of velcro on my NB/small dipes for this reason. Fuzzibunz are pretty great OS dipes as far as fitting the child well, but the crotch is a bit narrower and I prefer the wider crotch. I haven’t found a fave sized pocket dipe, yet. For me, it would be homemade (but no fave pattern, yet), since that’s the only way I can justify sized dipes. For newborns, fitteds and covers are great for keeping all that EBF poop contained (two barriers
) and fitteds usually have a natural inner instead of a synthetic one…usually. I loved Kissaluvs zeros and thirsties covers (touch tape/aplix) for the newborn stage! Fave cover is a flip cover because it has that flap in the front that is supposed to hold a prefold but it helps to cover fitteds so they don’t poke out and wick on the pants. Also, consult this list for help with detergent choices. http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm Also on that website is some good info regarding wash routine. Hope that helps!

We cloth diaper and I can tell you my favorite things that fit my budget and then my coveted wishlist of diapers! Right now, I love a combination of BumGenius 4.0 with snaps and Thirsties Duo Wrap with cotton flats.
But if I were re-purchasing my stash anew, I’d likely go with G-dipes or Flip or another method that has both cloth stuffers and flushable/disposable stuffers with multi-use cloth covers.
And get Planet Wise wet bags! I love those things. I’ll continue to use them for swimming clothes transport after my diapering days are done.
I use a mixture of Flips, Bum Genius, Prefolds, and Grobaby (now GroVia). I love the Grobaby diapers. They are SUPER absorbant and the go-to diaper for night time. Our baby girl can lay on her side, do tummy time, or lay on her back without me having to worry about leaking.

Fuzzi Bunz all the way! They are GREAT, easy to clean, and don’t leak. Use hemp inserts (I made my own) and weirdly, you can resell the used diaps on ebay and recoup much of your investment.
Furthermore, for when you are on the go, I recommend Tushies disposable diapers — they don’t have the nasty nasty chemical beads inside.
congrats!
Good luck to you! I’ve been cloth diapering for 3.5 years now and have had fun trying out lots of brands just b/c there are so many different cute designs out there. But I’d say the workhorse, tried and true diaper of our stash is Fuzzi Bunz. I agree with the person who said avoid velcro b/c it sounds so easy but then wears out quickly; however, I think it’s nice to have a few velcro diapers (like BumGenius – they are great) on hand for times when you just want the easiest thing possible. Babysitters and grandparents especially love easy. : )
Don’t buy many tiny newborn sized diapers, since your baby will outgrow them so fast. For those I liked Kissaluv size 0′s or Thirsties fab fitteds with a cover. But if you are going to be doing a combo of cloth and disposable anyway, then maybe just do disposable newborn diapers, and jump into the cloth when the baby is a month or 6 weeks old. Oh, I also love Planetwise wetbags and Charlie’s Soap is what we wash with.
Good luck! We use Bumgenius 3.0 (we’ve been at it 2 years, there was no 4.0 then) and Happy Heiney’s. The HH’s seem to be holding up a bit better after two years than the BG’s and I love the HH’s but the daycare has a lot of trouble with them – most likely cause of leakage and dirty clothes sent home.
At night we use Gdiapers with the disposable insert, nothing else holds enough (including hemp, etc.). The gdiapers are great but the plastic liners eventually lost their waterproofness and needed to be replaced – about the same time we needed to move up from medium to large.
Thanks so much for the shout-out, Christine! We’re so excited about your new addition and we can’t wait to see you stroll into Isis for one of our Mom & Baby Yoga classes!
you should head over to Diaper Lab in Somerville. they have cloth diapering workshops and a try before you buy program so you can try out different brands of cloth diapers for a few weeks and then return the ones you don’t like. check out http://www.diaperlab.com
they were so helpful when our son was a newborn!
I love applecheeks diapers, I did a lot of research to pick them. I have a post about it here: http://hannaslifeiscool.blogspot.com/2010/02/diaper-stash.html
and a follow up post after 5 months here: http://hannaslifeiscool.blogspot.com/2010/07/cloth-diapering-update.html
How lucky baby #2 will have such a great big sister!! I am chiming in on the cloth diaper thing because I have tried many and researched many… cloth diaper die hards can get really crazy about sharing their experiences and their preferences. To each his own, every baby is different but I think Nicki at Nicki’s Diaper has taken the best of ALL of them Flip, Bumgenius… you name it and created the Best Bottom Diaper. No stuffing, great absorbency, amazing covers with leg gussets – it truly is a combo of the best, and her website shows the comparison: http://www.nickisdiapers.com. I’ve actually been to both shops in Wisconsin – she sells a lot of brands, but the ones she has created have been amazing. I’ve been using them since I discovered them when my daughter was about 6 months. She is 14 months now. I wash what I have every 2 days, and they look as good as the first day I bought them… AND my daycare even uses them without any problems. I send Nicki created Planetwise “wet bags”, and it works well. All the best!
We did the covers/prefolds when my daughter was a newborn, but wanted one kind of diaper to get us to potty training. We bought a load of Bum Genius Elementals and have not looked back. Love, love, love them. Have added doublers as necessary as my daughter has grown, but still using them and fully intend to keep them all for #2.
So honored to be featured here and thank you everyone for all of the cloth diapering recommendations! I am officially overwhelmed. But in a good way!
My fave cloth diapers are the Flip system and the BumGenius 4.0s w/ snaps.
You would probably need something else though for the tiny newborn stage. Good luck!
What beautiful pictures! I admire any woman who can take a pic of herself while pregnant and look so stunning! My second son is almost 9 months old and I’m truly amazed at what a different experience it is. The upside: you are far braver with the things that you attempt to do with the baby. I took my little one to get a pedicure once! I couldn’t get over myself. I would never have tried that with my first. The downside: I find I haven’t made as many new friends because the baby shadows my toddler’s current routines. My friend and I joke that our little ones don’t have any “friends.” Just their older siblings and their sibs’ friends. Good luck and get to the hospital quickly! That second one doesn’t mess around!
Congratulations Christine. Love the three things you’re looking forward to. The bottle feeding is a good one. It’s never fun to waste liquid gold.
Beautiful pregnancy pics! I’ve got 5 kids, 25, 20,19, 7 and 17 months…so I’ve been a rookie mom a couple of times. I think one of the best things about being a mom again (any kids after a first) is how much more confident you feel. You’ve done it and although all kids are a little different you kinda (usually) know what to expect! That poor first trial and error kid! Congrats!
I just started cloth diapering and really love FuzziBunz, Bum Genius 4.0 and Rumparooz. All 3 are pocket style diapers and for someone who never used them until our 2nd daughter, I can say they are great to use. Good Luck!
