When the box with the Sylvania Rocket Ship Flashlight arrived, my kid was in love with it. He didn’t even know what it did, but he knew it was excellent. I explained to Holden that it was a special flashlight for kids that he could take to school for the monthly kids’ parties (AKA PNO, AKA Parents Night Out, AKA the preschool keeps my kids until 11pm for a fraction of what my regular babysitter charges, AKA we both LOVE PNO but I was talking about the light here).

This light looks like a rocket ship — see adorable picture — and has an easy on/off switch and no obvious other ways to explore it (eliminating all the “hmmm, what happens if I unscrew this part?!” experimentation) and a landing pad that doubles as a recharging base. We both were thrilled. Unfortunately, the last flashlight that we had sent with him to school was a hearty but small little mag light that bit the dust at the hands of curious two- and three-year olds; it still worked but was missing some pieces and was of questionable safety.
When the time finally rolled around for PNO, I put a little label under the rocket man so it looked like Holden was the astronaut (heck, faster, easier, and cuter than a sharpie!) and we were good to go.
This cool PalPODzzz thingie also bills itself as a nightlight, but that was a no-go for us. The light was too bright (Milo woke up in the middle of the night to tell Holden about it even though it was barricaded by 2 stuffed animals so he wouldn’t see it) and too enticing (“Mommmmyyyyy, I want it in my bed!”). Instead of taking advantage of the nightlight feature, we just use the base as a charger when needed and then go nuts with the flashlight.
In the interest of full disclosure:
- We are not nightlight-in-the-bedroom people.
- I got this flashlight as part of a Parent Bloggers Campaign, but I deem it totally worth buying.
- I think Palpodzzz is a really dumb name.
