Activity #704: Craft some hair clips for you or baby

by Heather

Could these hair barrettes BE any cuter? No, I don’t think so. AngryChicken has a full tutorial about making a felted “sleeping bag” for these baby hair clips and then adorning them with buttons so they stay put.

Angry Chicken Barrettes

In my house, I’m a constant hair clip wearer (and thus, loser of hair clips). Sometimes my boys will try them on to be like mommy, but usually it’s me looking for a cute accessory that’s both functional and cheap!

If I can dust off my sewing machine after vacation, I may crank out a bunch of these and show them off on our blog. I will feel much better about myself the next time someone admires my hair clip and I can proudly say “I made it” rather than whispering “it’s from Target.”

Read the full tutorial here (with pictures!)

As long as you have that sewing machine out:
Make a styley dress from a T-shirt
Make easy kids pants

Activity #295: Write a “did do” list

by Heather

If you’re getting sick of your “to do” list getting longer and not shorter and wondering where the heck is all your time going, try writing a “did do” list. Share it with your baby-daddy at the end of the day and encourage him to be very impressed. The truth is that your time is filled with lots and lots of recurring tasks that you never had to deal with before.

So set aside this list:

  • Fix chip in front windshield
  • Call Amanda back
  • Change name with United Airlines
  • Order wedding albums
  • Buy Whitney’s birthday present

and, for at least one day, make this list:

  • Changed 10 wet diapers
  • Changed 4 poopy diapers, 1 blowout
  • Selected 2 full outfits
  • Changed baby’s entire outfit 3 times
  • Nursed for 4 hours
  • Photographed offspring
  • Showered, almost
  • Made myself lunch
  • Ate breakfast and half of lunch
  • Made this list

you get the idea. Own it. Live it. Love it.

Activity #698: Buy one less thing

by Whitney

I am assuming that Seattle, like Berkeley, is a hotbed of green ideas. So it’s no surprise that Lynn at Family Style Love says “I think that I have become borderline obsessed with “greening” my life.” She makes the most excellent point that all the magazine articles that are selling us greener versions of products we already own are really suggesting that we buy more stuff, which is really the big problem here, isn’t it? The stuff? The stuff that is taking over the planet?

Reuse, baby!

And that, my friends, is why my husband and I drive old cars rather than hybrids.

So, let’s take a look at how Lynn avoided buying some plastic-y bibs. Instead she bought some snaps. And used some dishtowels. And made a functional, washable bib for the ever-adorable Harris.

Activity #692: Hit me with your best shot of the summer

by Whitney

My daughter’s first summer wasn’t that awesome, to be honest. She was born on the 4th of July, so I was fat and sweaty all summer. I hardly slept. Postpartum, I had enormous breasts that were probably visible from across the bay in San Francisco. I was terrified of being left alone with both of my own children for more than two hours. She screamed in the car seat and made every road trip miserable. So instead of that summer, I sort of think of this one as her first summer. This summer she was fun.

To me, summer means blue skies, bathing suits, and laughter. This picture of Scarlett captures all those things. I’m sure the photographers among you will see it differently, but I think I will look back on this picture as emblematic of Scarlett’s babyhood, and her first summer.

The folks at Sony sent me this Cybershot with smile detection, 7.2 megapixels and tons of other features. My second favorite part of the camera is the hot pink carrying case I got for it. My first favorite part is that it took this picture.

So if you have a favorite pic from this summer, paste the link in the comments. We all want to see!
