Activity #519: Decorate for V-day

by Whitney

I gave Asha this post for ParentHacks, but realized we should have it here as well.

My husband says they are hideous, but we already have window decorations up for Valentine’s day, and my three- year old BOY says, “I love them. They are beautiful.”

valentine fabricI got out all my fabric and told him that Valentine’s colors are red, pink and purple. We picked out any fabric with those colors and spread them across the floor. I cut symmetrical hearts by folding pieces in half and then cutting a tear-drop shape. Our quick and dirty method of decorating was to tape the hearts to our front window. If my partner in crime were seven- or eight years old instead of three, I would have cut smaller hearts to glue in the larger ones, and then safety pinned them to a long piece of ribbon. But my son has no patience for a 30-minute project. Our method took about ten minutes.

Since we’re trying to declutter (always), I was happy to make use of some scraps!

Activity #316: Nourish the budding artiste

by Heather

Cooper is an artisteKeep your Pottery Barn Kids table and chairs pristine by visiting MOCHA for your artistic messes and creative exploration.

The Oakland Museum of Children’s Art, MOCHA, is free for gallery visits and has an awesome Drop-In Art Studio for kids between ages 18 months and 5 years for only $5. See the website for hours and location.

My friend, and mom of 2, Lori reports:

I’ve overheard more than one mom commenting that this is “all the stuff I’d like to have at home but am afraid of the clean up.” A number of art activity tables, sinks with beans for scooping, a painting wall, and a play house complete with kitchen.

Fun, stimulating and a lot of variety perfect for a toddler’s short attention span and a great deal for $5. It’s a small art space, but because MOCHA has windows, it’s not as claustrophobic as Habitot. The courtyard just outside is also a good place to run around and chase new-found friends.

MOCHA exhibits are always freeBest to avoid on the weekends or on days when a lot of preschoolers are out of school.

Stop by Cafe 817 around the corner on Washington street for coffee and a take out sandwich for mom.

Activity #291: (Heart) someone or something

by Whitney

Baby Mack hearts his daddy Make your partner feel loved by using your baby’s chest as advertising space.

Put an “I love” message on a onesie or bib and take a picture of the baby wearing it. This baby is rocking the straightforward message to daddy. I myself prefer a more subtle tribute to my husband with a projection of his hobbies or interests on the kid. “I (heart) downloading music for free” or “I (heart) burritos”.

I’ve thought of a few ways of achieving this:

Fern and Baby Mack made this great onesie including a little homemade caricature of daddy. Well done!
