If you’re lucky enough to live where the warm summer rains down in splashy goodness, I hope you’re out there playing in it! My tip is to find a tennis court that is empty (because of the rain) and let your little toddler run wild.
Pack some dry clothes lest you end up like me and Holden. Rain boots optional.
Here in Berkeley, it usually only rains in the Winter — and sometimes it feels like all Winter if you’re cooped up with a toddler. But I remember “real weather” from growing out Out East so I can imagine all the fun you guys are having.

This is a quickie little game that I do probably once a day… it’s easy to do when Holden is already in my lap or on the glider and he likes it about as much as me playing with his little piggies.
Easy steps to fake boat rowing:
- Sit on the floor with your legs together and straight out in front of you.
- Lay your baby on your legs with his head at your feet and his feet close to your body.
- Hold his hands and pull him toward you as you lean back and forth.
- As you lean forward, lower him again to your legs. While you are rocking, sing the song: Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.
It sounds simple enough, but Holden likes mix it up by combining standing, sitting, and laying down so he’s a lot to hold onto. This is also a really big hit when I do it on the glider… we really move then.

Try out your big baby in a backpack carrier and hike around. If this is your first time using the backpack carrier, do yourself a favor and make the first hike around the house or the yard in case baby hates his new method of transport.
When you’re ready, hit the real world for some hand free walking or go on a real hike through actual nature! If you don’t want to go it alone or you’re at a loss for the best trails, East Bay Moms organizes regular hikes and activities. To be totally honest, I haven’t done any yet, but it’s on my list.

My cousin just sent me this link: MyKleenexTissue.com.
You can order oval-shaped Kleenex boxes customized with a photo that you upload and decorate with borders and text. I played around with the tool, and it was pretty fun. You get to see a 3-D version of the box you’ve created. This would be a cute way to commemorate an event where crying is expected, like a wedding.
The price is $4.99 per box plus shipping. Shipping is calculated in the shopping cart, but will be about $6.00 to ship 1-6 oval cartons, so that’s crazy for one box, but economical to purchase six.
Since I have become a mother, our use of Kleenex has skyrocketed, however, I think this would be even more of a thrill for the grandmothers. I just ordered each of them a box with a picture of the baby and text that reads “Welcome to my bathroom. Would you like to see more pictures of my new granddaughter?”
