Activity #343: Put your baby’s face on a cupcake

by Heather

frosting boy yumAs we get closer to our own 1st birthday here at RookieMoms, I’m prompted to dig up a fun little post from Photojojo about how to print any picture in frosting.

How fabulous is that?! I completely want to do it, but I can’t decide if we should use the stroller girl or our actual faces.

Anyway, using crazy sweet technology from Icing Images, you can upload or mail your own photos to be turned into deliciousness. Or you could buy your own edible ink.

Let me know if you’ve tried this and had good or bad luck with it. How does it taste? Is it creepy eating your child’s head? I’m obsessed!

Activity #42: Start a baby book

by Whitney

family tree by small objectsThat song “Hey-Ya” by Outkast was so popular that I decided it should be documented in the baby book. Is that weird? I wrote “Popular song is Hey-ya by Outkast.” I figure Julian will download it someday and laugh. I also think it’s babybook-worthy that going to the movies cost $10 as of his birthdate, but I’m sure when the kids grow up and read that they’ll be all “$10 for a movie! Dude! That’s way [insert slang word meaning inexpensive]”

There aren’t tons of details in my book, just a paragraph per month above a picture or two. I try to write down new tricks when I can remember them. [click to continue...]

Activity #397: Take your baby to a grown-up restaurant

by Heather

Dining out like adultsWhitney and I both love Picante. But sometimes you want to go to a place that feels a little more grown-up.

There are fancy restaurants with linen tablecloths and eerie, romantic silence and there are groovy, funky, cool restaurants that make you feel like an adult again while being a sensory treat for your older baby. I’m talking about taking your highchair-sittin’ baby to the latter. T-Rex BBQ in Berkeley is such a place with its high ceilings and a lengthy cocktail list. We went there last week and were pleasantly surprised how baby-friendly it turned out to be.

All that being said, go out with a big noisy group when you can. Or at least with understanding, kid-loving people (who will want to give you and your spouse a break and take the kid to look around) and the meal will seem that much smoother.

My tips for a good evening at an adult dinner establishment:

Activity #177: Spend a week in Hampstead (London, baby)

by Heather

Norah in LondonMy good friend Valerie did me the favor of having a baby shortly after I did, but then went and moved out of the Bay Area all the way to London… as if I wasn’t having a hard enough time crossing the bridge into San Francisco to see her and Baby Norah.

She’s sent us her ideal week’s worth of local activities with the caveat that she and Norah are really only capable of one activity a day – and sometimes just going to the grocery store counts as that day’s activity. (As long as I pass the threshold of my front door, it counts as an outing in my book!)

Alrighty, here goes Val’s week in London’s Hampstead district…
