Activity #308: Have a crawling race

by Heather

on your marks get set goIn college, we played this drinking game in which we’d bet on which of the fishies in the fishy-screen-saver would cross the screen first. Well, this activity is sort of the same thing for a baby.

You see, your baby doesn’t really know he’s racing you. In order to heat things up, you need to quickly crawl up to him (in the same direction that he is already crawling) and then challenge him to a race by crawling faster and acting excited with noise… much like a person at a stop-light might start gunning their engine if they wanted to challenge you.

I pick the zebra fish!If you wanted to put money on the crawling races in my house, I would suggest that the mama always wins on carpet and the baby always wins on hardwood.

Activity #358: Prepare for a disaster

by Heather

disaster, such a catastropheAnd I’m not just talking about another diaper blow-out. “Imagine that you have no electricity, no gas, no water and no telephone service…” Yikes!

The City of San Francisco has a great website to help you assess your disaster preparedness including step-by-step instructions for how to make a plan and build a kit with survival necessities for the 3 days it might take for basic services to be restored.

It’s a grim thought, sure, but you’re somebody’s mama now. Visit 72Hours.org and get started now!

Activity #328: Wash hands

by Heather

Holden loves to wash his hands. Loves everything about it: hanging over the sink, reaching for the stream of water, and seeing his distorted reflection in the faucet. Maybe he also loves the feeling of clean after crawling on the ground, but I doubt it.

So, wash those little baby hands and set your child on a lifetime of cleanliness!

Activity #354: Spend a week in Oakland

by Whitney

Buy some Oakland gear from LisaOur friend Lisa, gives us the lowdown on spending a week in her fair Oakland, CA. OK, well we’ve never actually met her, but she’s done us the honor of being the first guest Rookie Mom. You could be next - just volunteer.

Here’s Lisa’s one-outing-per-day schedule:

Monday

Lake Temescal

Tucked in an unlikely place right next to Route 13 is Lake Temescal, a sweet little oasis right before the Oakland Hills. This lake is surrounded by picnic areas, green patches, and a great sandy beach. When it’s warm, you can swim in the lake, and when it’s not, you can still have fun making sandcastles and strolling along the paved paths.

Tuesday

Bittersweet Chocolate Café in Rockridge near Rockridge Kids @ 5427 College Ave, Oakland 94618

Just because you’re no longer pregnant doesn’t mean you don’t still crave chocolate. Make a date with a girlfriend at Bittersweet Café on College Avenue. Although it might be a tight squeeze, this charming café will make it all worth it when you score your table and settle in with a cup of their signature Bittersweet drink and some pan au chocolat. A great place to spend a Monday morning, and when it’s sunny, you, your friend, and baby can park yourselves out front at a sidewalk café table.
