Activity #88: Design your own baby clothes

by Heather

Holden is about one month old.My brain used to hurt with all the clever ideas for baby t-shirts I thought I was having. I’d think of ideas at the least opportune moments, try to remember them, make a picture or word art in Powerpoint, then print on iron on paper.

Use multi-packs of snapsuits from Target (5 for $9) for your canvas. Funny nicknames, favorite pictures, anything is fair game.

This picture of Holden features his “Texas Hold’en” onesie.

Activity #266: Give your baby a pickle

by Heather

Olivia loves her pickleWhat?! Yep, a pickle spear for a baby… I found out about this little trick while Holden was sitting in my lap and I was trying to eat a slice of pizza. I handed him the pickle spear figuring he’d lick it, make a face and get on with grabbing for my lunch. Well, he loved it!

Recently, I was discussing this unorthodox “food” with some other rookie mom friends and 3 out of 4 of them also gave their toothless kids pickles to make ‘em happy.

Stick a pickle spear in that greedy hand and watch closely to make sure no chunks are gnawed or bitten off.

Activity #94: Drive-through

by Heather

If baby likes to sleep in the carseat, it is great to patronize nearby drive-through businesses so you can have a destination. Maybe it’s an In-N-Out or a drive-through Starbucks. If you’re creative and persuasive, you might get normal businesses to serve you curbside if business is slow.

As I was doing our environment a disservice by driving around to keep Holden asleep, I called up Baby World on Telegraph Avenue and asked if they could possibly come outside and take my credit card and bring me some things I needed. Score! If your baby is a car napper, keep the phone number of a store like this in your cell phone.

Activity #261: Bust out the Baby Beatles

by Heather

Bedtime With the Beatles (Blue Cover)We have a great CD of Beatles music lullabied for babies… it’s calm, instrumental, familiar yada yada yada. We bought it in the early days when we were still trying anything to help Holden sleep (before we settled on white noise).

Anyway, it has a surprising second life. On the weekends when we can’t get home in time for a real crib nap, we bust out the Bedtime with the Beatles CD and lull Holden to sleep in his cozy car seat. Just this month, we’ve used this trick 4 times to take turns running errands while one of us waits in the car (or just outside on the cell phone).

Oh yeah, the pink and blue covers are to appeal to your sense of gender enforcement — they’re the same music.
