Activity #140: Sing and dance

by Heather

Soon enough, you may be bullied into playing “kid’s music” non-stop, but before that happens, you can (and should!) sing and dance around to your favorite songs.

Let us know what lip synch or air guitar routines your baby likes best.

Activity #213: Read other literary mamas

by Heather

Self-proclaimed “literary magazine for the maternally inclined,” LiteraryMama.com is a wealth of poetry, essays, columns. It’s a good mix of funny, serious, thought-provoking, etc.

I get sucked into something different every time I visit. Enjoy.

Activity #200: Trick baby into napping

by Heather

We’re still doing about 3 to 4 naps a day. But right now, Holden is having his usual I-hate-Mondays and I-won’t-nap-for-you thing. After the requisite nap routine, fussing, talking, diaper “situations”, I gave up and we played. Well, it is very clear that he is still sleepy, so I did the stealth-swing nap move (in total violation of our established nap procedures):

  1. Put him in the swing like he’s going to play
  2. Turn on lights and music to hypnotize us both
  3. Give him toy to hold onto (optional, since he grabbed the rings on swing)
  4. Darken room lights, tip-toe away, hide in another room

The side-to-side swing is not the one we have, but whenever we visit friend’s houses who have it, he jumps right in.

Activity #199: Cook and freeze

by Heather

When you bother to cook, double it and freeze half. Make sure to freeze in portions that you’ll want to use because nothing bums me out faster than trying to defrost the entire basketball-size brick of beef stew because I can’t snap off a portion for me and Alec.

Ideas for meals to cook and freeze:

  1. Lasagna
  2. Beef Stew
  3. Any casserole or masterpiece from your crock pot

And pretty soon, you can make and freeze food for baby too. :)
