Chele, it sort of depends on the kid and the situation. Holden and Julian were very into stickers around that age but their little friend Olivia couldn't have handled the responsibility to not eat them. Get out some stickers when you're sitting Right There (like at a restaurant or on an airplane) and see if the magic happens. I always stay close when stickers are involved because I don't want them Everywhere.

I'm a little confused about the sticker recommendation for babies. Babies 12-18 months are rather young to understand the purpose of stickers and they would end up in their mouths. Could you clarify? I apologize if I misunderstood.

I think we've found that if you proactively ask for things you DO want, that can help sometimes. Frankly, the lure of toys is too strong for most grandparents to resist -- especially if they live far away and think that just one thing... ok maybe two or three... is not a big deal.

Another thing that has worked is that we phase in the toys throughout the year rather than BOOM on Dec 26, Holden has 17 new toys. I've also been rather scrooge-like about not wanting the baby to be overwhelmed in the opening of gifts, but I think now that he's 2.5, I"m going to lose that battle.

So, we'll let him open stuff and then confiscate 80% of the goods and work with him to pick which toys to donate.
